    Good piece of business.
    And it's quite revealing too.
Firstly, when did Spurs pay 30 year defenders £150k per week? That's a big statement about wages.
Secondly, for him to have committed now, so early in Mourinho's tenure, before the January window is even open and having refused to accept a new deal for so long, reinforces the view that Pochettino had done some falling out.
Thirdly, it hints at Mourinho having made his mark quickly and in a positive way.
I doubt Eriksen will follow his lead - but you never know!

The main takeaway about Toby's wages is we can afford to triple them now because he refused to triple them two years ago, given we saved £100k a week for two and a bit years

Of course, wishful thinking also suggests we might also have some cash freeing up from jettisoning Wanyama soon...

For all that he wouldn't sign a new contract, he was never in any way disrespectful to the club or fans and always seemed very committed to playing his best for us. I'll always remember his interview after the 2nd leg against Ajax and wondering how we'd got to the point where he looked likely to leave.

As you say, having him extend his contract is a big tick for the new regime and I reckon that Jan will also stay. Christian Eriksen's said that he wants to go elsewhere and I don't see that changing. His age makes him a much more attractive proposition to the top clubs.

As for wages, Spurs have always spent 50-60% of their income on them and right now paying Toby an extra £5m a year for 3.5 years could save us a transfer fee of £50m+. Viewed in that light, it's a complete bargain and gives Mourinho a win with fans like my younger brother, who still isn't having him at any price.

Good points Lidl. A certain Danny Rose will have been following these developments very closely, especially after the latest interview in his docu-series "How to lose friends and alienate people" in which he openly said that his age was the reason he wasn't being offered a new deal. Toby is a year and a bit his senior but despite this has been awarded a huge pay rise and a contract tying him to the club until he is 34 years of age. I would say a penny for Rose's thoughts but no doubt we'll all hear the lowdown whenever he next sits down with a journalist.

Toby has remained professional, tried to do his job to the best of his ability, shown respect and kept his gob shut, which has earned him a new contract. Rose has been unprofessional, done his job poorly, been disrespectful and opened his gob to anybody who would listen, which has earned him a place on the transfer list.

  8. The fact that Alderweireld has signed under Mourinho when he staunchly refused to sign under Poch is very telling, and goes a long way to explaining why the team was under performing.

Kind of agree (bet your worried when I agree with you <laugh>) but it's a big bit weird.
He was offered over £135,000 per week in early june 2017 which he has continued to turn down.
I am genuinely am pleased he signed but am as genuinely curious as to why no one bought him for £25m in the summer.

Tbf good deal for everyone all round. Hes on 150k for the next four years, something he probably wouldnt have got anywhere else.

Good for you guys as you have a solid guy and wont need to replace him for 50m for a good couple of years.

Roma's lowball offer should have made it clear in his mind: the upper echelon have centre backs who can play at the top level for at least 4-5 years (Varane, Sule, de Ligt) so his options weren't as wide open as he believed

Four seasons of low wages + four seasons of 150K/week will average out
at 8+ seasons at 80-90K/week over the duration (if he serves it) .

Considering his wages when Spurs bought him, there is no way we would
have got a comparable CB for an 8 season spell at that average wage.

Yup. Spurs have done brilliantly out of toby, especially on transfer fees and wages.

It was more for rcl and how toby has ripped himself off on low wages for two years but actually hadn't done too poorly out of this

Still mystified as to why City didn't grab him up.

And Fernandinho plus a couple of youngsters who can probably do a job.

Nobody wanted Toby for £25M, there is a reason for that.

Are you going to enlighten us as to what these reasons were?
