Comm was drawn to that hiag gay thread like a moth to a flame. He's torn between wanting to beat hiag to a pulp or brutally bumming him.

38 years ago tonight, our community lost 8 of it's men in the Penlee Lifeboat disaster. They were scrambled to assist in the rescue of the crew of the Union Star which had run around on rocks in heavy seas with waves up to 40ft. Search and Rescue helicopters from RNAS culdrose weren't able to fly due to the high winds, so it was left to the Solomon Browne and her crew to try and rescue the crew.

They managed to get alongside the stricken vessel and retrieve 4 members of the crew onto the lifeboat. After radioing their intentions to go back in and try and get the rest of the crew who were now clinging to the upturned hull, they lost radio contact when presumably a huge wave tossed the lifeboat onto the hull of the Union Star and smashed it to pieces.

All souls were lost that night, and so today is a solemn day here in west Cornwall where we remember brave volunteers, fathers, brothers and sons who gave their lives trying to rescue others. <rose>

One of the charities I still support. I used to sail and I know what great work those guys do.

They are unpaid volunteers and the RNLI receives no state funding and survives on donations alone.

Some of my best friends are volunteers for the lifeboat crew where I live. The same people I surf with, hang out with and share a beer with.

It could have been any one of them that night.

I don’t live close enough to the lifeboat station homes. You have to be within 10 mins of the station and I’m about 15-20 mins away.

When my little un is a bit older, I might volunteer with the Coastguard search and rescue team though. I’ve got a couple of mates who do that. Can be grim work though, often it is retrieving bodies that have fallen from cliffs or been washed up on beaches etc.
