Nah it is only one percent......You see the percentage is divided equally..........He scored 47 out of 48. so therefor 48 represents 100 so 47 can represent 99 the same as 24 can mean 50, 12 can mean 25 and so on. (However mathematically you could argue if the figures are not evened out then the true percentage would be 97.916%) It only gets complicated if you had a very low scoring rate. Making it nearer 2% would mean that he would have dropped nearly 2 out of 100 shots. As I bloody well said he scored 99% percent of the time from penalty kicks.:emoticon-0116-evilg

Rickie has never missed. Beattie never missed. I'm pretty sure Crouch never missed. Or Rasiak...Don't think Dodd did either when he had his chances. Magilton and Surman have failed us though.

I always thought that with Le Tiss penalties, there was a psychological element to it. It reminds me of a quote I saw about Jose Luis Chilavert on a video my grandma got me. Paraphrased:

"Its a penalty to Paraguay, and Chilavert is lining up to take it. He will score. He knows it, the crowd knows it, and most of all, the keeper in goal knows it."

Same reason England always **** up penalty shootouts.

I think Crouch only ever took one penalty that really mattered.:)

Does anyone know if Lambert has ever missed a penalty?

I reckon we should merge this thread with Bristol Rovers and the other club he's played for and ask :)

Whenever Matty, and later, Beatts used to take a penalty, I was never nervous of them missing, even against the best keepers we'd come up against. Nowadays, with Rickie taking them, I sometimes even give voice to my confidence, because if Saints are awarded a penalty, I automatically start celebrating another goal added to the Saints scoreline. Last Sunday, against Birmingham, I found myself quietly saying, 1-0 to myself, before he'd even lined up for the shot. Now if it was anyone else..?

For those who are a little less than generous to Steve Claridge: during the JPT Final, Rickie scored his penalty, and Claridge said to his co-commentator that with some penalty takers you wonder whether they might wobble or miss - not with Lambert. Credit to him, he's right.

    Surely,mathematically, 97.916 approximates to 98%, therefore equating to a 2% miss rate?

To put it another way: 47 out of 48 is the same ratio as 94 out of 96 - even if he scored ALL remaining four kicks his total could not exceed 98 = 2% miss!

Rickie hasn't missed a penalty for Saints - 100% certain of that. I got my first season ticket in 2002 so I never saw Le Tiss play, so for me it is between Rickie and Beatts... I'm gona go with Rickie!

Ahh Brecon.......if you look at the original quote or post you will see that no figures were actually used only in percenntage terms. Now assuming the whole equates to 100 -1 = 99 so my term he scored 99% of his penalties or that he was 99% acurate is correct.

You are absolutely right, brecon. You obviously understand percentages very well. It can be difficult to explain this concept to some other people, particularly those who write in red crayon. ;)

As I mentioned earlier, I don't think Beatts has missed in his entire career, during serious competition. I think he's a real contender. Must look up how he's actually scored. Thing is, where do you look, that will have that data..?
