Maybe if you had looked it up you’d have got your facts right. Markets hate uncertainty - sterling had been falling against the dollar for a while prior to the referendum - a primary reason was uncertainty over the referendum. Hence I was referring to a rate I happened to buy something at in late 2015, not a rate artificially pegged down by the upcoming referendum. When a remain win was forecast it bounced back up to around 1.50 - predictions were for it to continue to rise... then leave won and it hit its lowest rate in decades. Who knows what effect brexit will actually have on sterling but the market fear of it, has fcked our currency
There was a boost as the gamblers expected a remain vote. It had been around £1.40. It got to 1.47 then, when they knew the result it plummeted. It NEVER got to £1.58
nobody knows do they? In 5 years time if the country is prospering with great trade deals with Europe and the states etc, and we’ve put the great back in Britain.. then he’ll be wrong.
The Green party getting burned too. Politicians/activists need to understand that projections need to be reasonable. Carbon neutral by 2025 would mean us going back to pre industrial times.
Such is life but much better than being tied to the sinking ship that is the EU. You raise your kids, educate them and do all you can to give them a future but they might end up working in McDonald's. **** happens and the majority of this country are ok with that
I didn’t say it was 1.58 the day of the referendum you interpreted that and are continuing to do so despite being given the explanation. I was quoting a rate from the previous year as a benchmark I recalled before the rate was effected by fear of the referendum. It was predicted to go back to around that level or even higher on a remain victory. I was following the exchange rate closely at the time and predictions for a car purchase. You said it got to 1.40 on a bounce.. you’ve now upped that to 1.47. It was reported that it hit 1.50. And you said it yourself, it was going higher in expectation of a remain win... ie it was lower because of uncertainty over brexit. It then fell off a cliff when brexit was announced. Ie The currency was dramatically effected by the uncertainty of brexit. It has gone up today because some of that uncertainty has gone. It has a long way to get to ‘par’. That was the point.
Exactly, if the result is as predicted then a Brexit will happen. I personally don't think it will do anything positive for the UK in the short, 1-2 years or medium term 2 - 10 years. I could be wrong, as if I was able to predict the future etc etc, but it is a very brave step.
I therefore disagree with the majority of the people in the UK, but I repect their right to hold their views.
I did latch on to the £1.58 because I remember, at the time, hearing so much about Brexit destroying our currency. There was speculation before and after but, actually, a cheap pound is good for our exports so all would not be lost. I agree uncertainty causes opportunities for currency speculators to earn a few quid at our expense, which I'm sure they did. Getting Brexit done will settle things down.
Funny you should ask that, for a small price I could let you have my predictions? No guarantee, cash only
If, God forbid, Labour wins, as I've said before, I would accept the result because I'm a democrat. Even though I wouldn't agree with them and wouldn't be able to understand why they voted the way they did, I would suck it up. I am really lucky to live in a democratic country.
At the end of the day that's all that can be done, change the government at the next election if they stuff up. The aspects of changing an international treaty though can't simply be undone at the next election if it doesn't work out. I sincerely hope it does all go fine but in my opinion I can't see how, what you appear to be voting for, is better than what you have, from an economic perspective. I realise there are social issues that I can't obviously appreciate as I don't live in the UK.
Maybe if you lived in the UK you would have a different opinion. If this exit poll is even remotely right then a huge majority of voters want something you don't. Not everyone is stupid or ill informed or susceptible to Russian propaganda. At some point those who have campaigned for remain have to appreciate that the unwashed masses don't agree with them
Totally agree in a democracy the people have the right to say what government they want. I still think it is wrong for the UK to leave the EU but all that can be done now, as an observer, is sit back and see what happens. As I've said several times, good luck, in my opinion you're going to need it.
Interesting to see all the defeated Labour candidates now saying that it was all JC's fault, and that he was no great leader. Now they say it? I think most people knew this a long time ago.
