    Not at all.

I was at school when I witnessed the decline of respect for teachers coming into the profession (around '64), as they came across as wets (certainly scruffier than those from the 'old school' - far more casual & less demanding), wishing to become 'friends' with the pupils, rather than individuals whose role was to teach them to achieve results in examinations and life, whilst not accepting anything that conflicted with that approach.

Prior to this there were never any thoughts about showing teachers any disrespect, the new breed quickly put a stop to that way of thinking - they were openly derided!

Can't see video but teachers hands are tied, in that there is no way they can stop pupils who are causing trouble as they have no deterrent i.e. the cane. We are in the mess we are in because of parents not checking their kids. I see parents trying to reason with mischevious 3 yr olds. They do not understand this. A slap on the arse reminds them not to be mischievious every time they are thinking of causing mischief. If I didn't know I would be put in a jail for a long time I would rob a bank. Jail is my deterrent, a slap on the arse is the kids equivalent deterrent.

I think you'll find that to a larger extent those changes, particularly in later years, is to do with legislation that has been introduced not the teachers themselves. You clearly need to look more deeply into what is required of and what is expected of teachers before passing such sweeping judgments.

Classic Owld Feller. Anyone disagrees with him, then his inner Clouseau comes out and he decides he knows what they do for a living.

I'm, also, old enough to remember when the teacher's unions flexed their muscles and were allowed to determine the curriculum along with many other items that were previously laid down by the D.O.E.

This suited the 'newbies' no end, so when linked to the banning of corporal punishment in schools and their liberal attitudes to discipline imho this has resulted in the mess we see today.

None of this is relevant to the video. You come across as a bitter (senile?) old man, spouting the usual "back in my day..." drivel. But guess what, it's not your day anymore.

Yes of course. All teachers are liberal do-gooders who are determined to ruin our country with their permissive lefty sympathies and want to make us all live in some kind of enormous hippy commune. There's nothing like tarring everyone with the same brush, is there?
You're either on a wind up or enormously uninformed.

The video doesn't work so there is nothing to watch, what part of that do you not understand?

Jeeez. Corporal punishment was banned in schools for a reason. It didn’t work. If an adult has to hit a child in order to assert their authority that says more about the adult than the child.
All this crap about ‘it never did me any harm’ is exactly that - crap. They don’t know if it did or didn’t. I got the cane in school. It hurt - for what? Not doing my homework. Thats what. Yet the six foot lad who made my school days a living hell got nothing. What does that tell you.

Working in the business mind shows that there is a massive lean to the left, mainly by females I hasten to add. We have to be very, very careful not to say certain things, often things we don't think is dodgy.

I can imagine. My Mrs is a teacher, so about half the people I know are teachers and I learn about all the things that you can and can't do.

It's a minefield. I was observed once and got accused of prejudice...against "wine drinkers"

During an observation?! What did you say to make them say that?

I gave a scenario whereby a "posh bar with wine drinkers is opened in Newcastle" to highlight that the 9 protected characteristics of the equality act can be broken by stealth.

Agree with most of this, but the corporal punishment bit is debatable, violence should only be used in self defence, in an ideal world this would be never.

It may have helped if you'd actually read the thread before jumping in with both feet.

I explained that there had been a problem in post 14.

Plus @MackemX kindly linked the video in this one.

Going on what I've read about the problems with discipline in schools these days they should be looking at capital (not just corporal) punishment to teach some of these kids and their parents what is (and isn't) acceptable behaviour.:1980_boogie_down:
