Not really. He's more of a ball carrier, though he does seem to carry a goal threat. I think that we might end up playing a similar system to the 4-2-3-1 that Pochettino used for quite a while. One holding player (Dier, Wanyama, Skipp) and one runner (Ndombele, Sissoko, Winks?) in front of the back four. One creative player (Eriksen, Lo Celso), one pacy wide man (Son, Moura) and one drifting goal threat (Alli, Son) behind the striker. Mix it up a bit depending on the opposition.
I’ve seen him put/attempt a fair few slide rule passes in his short time with us but I agree with you he’s more of a ball carrier
Did anyone predict Mourinho would play more than half a match with Eriksen and Winks as his two defensive midfielders. Plus Rose and Aurier as full backs who are not good defenders. Son and Lucas were leaving our full backs exposed too. If he had picked a more solid defence from the start he probably wouldn't have needed to be so gung ho.
That can't be right. It's 11 players for 5 positions and everyone knows our squad is paper thin. And you've not even mentioned Lamela.....
None of our combinations are solid in defence...the formation might be but the individuals aren’t I think we need a new commanding CB
I refuse to get wet about Eriksen...he didn’t win it for us or anything...he certainly had one of his better games. He’s got no choice really...with 60 to go if he thought he was strolling around like he did under Poch then he knows full well he would have disappeared up the arse end of nothingness until the day his new club revealed him This victory was on Jose...you can’t play in his team unless you do what they did to turn it around and don’t they know it or at least die trying
Oh **** right off. Davies has said to reporters his injury “doesn’t look good, might be a while”. I can’t deal with having to watch any more of Rose, especially if he’s alongside Toby. Sess/ Jan at LB and Jan/ Foyth with Dave til January, please.
In his defence (no pun intended) Rose probably only played cos Davies was injured and tbh I ain't that sure who could have started in place of Toby. Both were appalling. Rose gave away his customary goal and offered bugger all going forward and Toby lost his man (without being blocked off) in the 6 yard box for the second and his distribution out from the back was woeful. I must sound like a broken record but Rose has been awful gor the best part of 2 years... yet we are considered to be in "danger of losing a top player" by pundits and fans alike... the fact that only Watford and Newcastle were willing to bid for him seems to have totally escaped their attention. Rose should not be in the squad let alone starting games...he is a complete liability. In the next month (injuries and fitness permitting) I expect to see a back line with four out of: Sessegnon, Sanchez, Foyth, Davies, Toby or Jan.
For like the fifth time this season already. How can a guy go from being one of the best CBs in Europe to Titus Bramble 2.0 in the space of 12-18 months?
Back from the match. At 2-0, I said to the bloke next to me that "we're not out of the game but 3-0 would be the end for us." The first half was shockingly bad. A terrible mistake from their defender just before half time let us back in...something that we've made a speciality of this season and it shows how it changes things. After that, they were pretty much there for the taking in the second half. I'd much rather that Lo Celso had come on for Dier, rather than Eriksen, If he's leaving, it's time to put him in the stand and let his replacement have some game time. A Winks/Dier pivot isn't good enough. Mostly, Dier isn't good enough currently and Winks needs to play in a three. As a two player pairing, it's hopelessly and fatally flawed. I fully expect to see it again against Bournemouth. However, it's a mistake and one of Lo Celso or Ndombele should play, preferably instead of Dier. Finally, I'm reminded why I don't frequent the North Stand. The atmosphere was crap and there were a lot of Olympiacos fans in there, although The Distillery after the game was good. Give me the South or East any day. Very pleased that we won but there's a lot to fix. Let's get on with it and try and keep up a winning run as we do.
The way he keeps on emphasising the mentality and belief. I think he realises that the last 5 years of expectancy and failure to deliver has cast some serious doubt on the squads self belief. Yeah no doubt some will say we didn’t fail and as Spurs fans we didn’t fail..we progressed. However the pressure of the footballing world and the nature of the beast means no trophy = failure. Plus our failures were consistent in their execution...they were weak once we could smell the Trophies. This is sitting in our players heads...really badly...so badly that it became a case of when we score it’s because the other team are meant to come back...that’s what it started to feel like. That’s a low place for the players to be in. We’ve won 2 out of 2 but it’s exactly like Jose said...these lads need to get to that place where they are not playing with the ghosts of their failures because in the last 2 games it’s apparent how they seem to filter in and out of the 2 managers philosophies...it’s like when they remember they have got Jose and his standards they turn it on...but they keep on resorting to type Slowly but surely...with Jose I believe we can rescue it and this squad can still taste glory but they have to want it...it’s up to them more than up to Jose and it’s up to Levy to get serious about the football.
I think we will see Jan on the left instead of Rose on Saturday, but I don't see him dropping Toby yet, I hope the rumours about Dias are correct as Davinson needs a new long term partner, because carrying Toby for another 6 months could kill him.
"This was the first time a team managed by Jose Mourinho had come from two goals down to win in a Champions League game - he had lost the previous 13 games in which his side had been two or more goals behind" on the BBC.
