Well pleased about that. http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/articles/hall-of-fame-steve-perryman-200911.html? I saw his debut back in 69, we lost 1-0 at home to Sunderland, England (og), IIRC, but even then he looked good. A true Spurs legend, and I hope Greavesie, my first football idol, will follow suit now.
Good news. Was wondering what Pienaar had done for such recognition, but Steve Perryman is a genuine Spurs legend and I am quite shocked it has taken this long!
Too right HD - I watched him many times and he was completely committed at all times - wish we saw the same application from everyone. He was more skilful than many gave him credit for too.
Well done Stevie. I first met him when I was 10 years old at a training session at Cheshunt and unlike some of the players there he came up to a few of us and chatted for a while. From then on he was my favourite Spurs player.
Yep, wonderful player for us. Not only is he club record appearance holder, but I suspect his six major honours whilst with the club is a record too. another of my all-time favourites, Cliff Jones, won I thin 5, including a sub medal in 67, but I don't recall anyone winning six. It's quite chastening to think that none of the current crop have more than one, and only Hudd Kaboul Jenas Lennon and surely Hall of Fame future entrant, King, have one? Considering the decent teams we've had over the past decade, that's quite depressing. Although, in many people's eyes, '4th is the new silverware', so priorities have changed to some extent. PS Harry, there's only one Stevie P I'm afraid it will always be Pienaar for t'other player, I like him, but hard to see him in the Hall of Fame any time soon. Apparently Perryman refused to join for a long time, so am delighted he has relented. We now need Greavesie in, who also refuses ATM, plus any others who have said 'No' in the past. Not sure what the situ is on Gilly, for example.
Whether they are inducted officially into the Hall of Fame or not, these players are legends in our hearts.
Was that Mike Englands(og) brilliant header from about 30yds out?Anyway well deserved for S.Perryman. I think he must have played in almost every game i saw as a kid for Spurs.
I wonder why it's taken this long? Excellent player with a superb attitude. Still involved in the game at Exeter, too.
Is this true that Greavsie isnt in the hall of fame? Unbelievable, he should have been one of the first in there!
I believe Greavesie has turned it down, mainly to avoid the "Party" that accompanies it. He avoids situations where there is alcohol.
Hi all, thanks for input. PBH, I can't remember how far Big Mike was out when he headed, scarily it's over 40 years ago now. But I vividly remember it being Stevie P's debut, and how I liked him from the start with his enthusiasm. Incidentally, Mike England remains in all my time Spurs XI to this day, and I hope he's in the Hall of Fame. And yes HIAG, as you say it's already been pointed out, Stevie took this long to get in, as he refused before. I suspect the reasons Greavesie won't join are more complex than just the alcohol business, he has real issues with Spurs, eg didn't turn up at various testimonal/tribute games in recent years. It's all very sad, and I hope it can be resolved. Jimmy is another in my all time Spurs XI, as is Stevie P at RB.
GH10 I don't ever remember him playing right back, but i think he played like a defensive mid. He epitomised what loyalty was about. My biggest moment is shown in my avatar- him lifting the FA Cup,because he deserved something from his playing at the top level.
Blimey PL, for someone in your avatar, you don't remember Stevie at right back When he could no longer cut it in the mid, and remember he had players like Hoddle and Ardilles to contend with, he moved to RB. He played RB in that very final you have his picture of, our mid that day was hodd ossie ricky and galvin. Agreed, he wasn't an orthodox RB, but that's where we basically played him throughout the 80s. I don't know when he made the switch, my guess would be by 78. Also don't want to be picky PL, but as I've pointed out SP won six major honours, possibly most ever for a Spurs player, so he got plenty from his wonderful career with us. Stevie certainly wouldn't be good enough to play mid in my all-time XI because the competition is simply awesome. Hodd, wadd, white, jones, gazza, blanchflower, burgess, mackay, bailey, ginola, ossie, peters to name just some/most of the leading candidates. But at RB I'd play him, as he he had enough defensive nous to do it, plus he could get forward and he had the will to win. Perryman and Mackay get into my team as both would be leaders and captains on the pitch.
Hi HD, Stevie may have done on occasions, but such was his lack of height, not very often, IMHO. In the 81 final it was Miller and Roberts at CB. Paul Price, Gary Mabutt and Stevens arrived and Robbo often played mid after 81, also Gough arrived in 86, I think. http://www.topspurs.com/thfc-history-cupfinalteams.htm is a good source of Cup Final teams.
Just to clear it up guys...you're both right! "Steve's versatility saw him play not only in midfield, but in a central defensive role, sweeper and finally at right back." Taken from this link. http://www.steveperryman.com/playingprofile.htm
