Many thanks to all those who took the time to send their team selections in. Here it is in a 4312 formation. GK - Tony Norman RB - Andy Davidson CB - Richard Jobson CB - Michael Turner LB - Vigo Jensen RM - Brian Marwood DM - Ian Ashbee LM - Stuart Elliott AM - Raich Carter ST - Chris Chilton ST - Ken Wagstaff Let the debating begin Dont forget you can see the full article in Aprils edition of 442 magazine.
I can't argue with that. The first thing that struck me was the low representation from our recent Premiership experience. If we collectively think that we had a better team when we were in Div 2 & Div 3 then it says a lot for why were not able to stay up.
i think it seems far more reasonable that i would have expected. 5 or more of those played top flight foobtall and some were internationals. i cant see how anyone could split chilton and wagstaff upfront or choose other striking options.
Oregon Tiger, A very good point regarding the lack of Premiership players. As x has said who would you split up ,if any and the Squads from the Prem where they that good?
No Windass? I feel that is wrong, as a man he's an idiot, as a footballer in the Black N Amber he did an awful lot both in his first spell but particularly in his second spell, saving us from relegation one season and leading us to the Premier League the next, for that he has to be in any Tigers best XI
Dean Windass should without doubt in here as ManchesterTiger states. This man helped save us from administration first spell, and second spell where do you start saved from relegation and then helped push us to the play offs, then THAT goal. He is even the premierships oldest goal scorer and all in the black and amber!
true but on the other hand alex dyer saved us from relegation one season too. theres an awful lot to balance out when choosing teams like this. the last time we had a mass vote billy whitehurst was right up there. my thought as is yours is that the players should be picked on the basis of what they did for hull city and not how great a player they were. weve had lots of great end of career players play the odd season for us and we could make up another team of them. players who spent almost all there careers at the top level and spent time at one end of there career with is. names like mortensen, mannion, emlyn hughes, ernie blenkinsop, tommy browell, gary ablett, ray parlour, david rocastle, billy bremner, and many more but these made there names elswhere without necessarily being great here. i expect windass did come high in the poll but if your making up a top X1 you have to take the best goalie even if the most popular goalie came in 500th place.
X, at last a well thought out, on topic hull city argument. Congrats and thank you please keep it this way. I love the debate when its on topic with what brought us all here. In regards to you argument i dont beleive Deano is just a popular character he also achieved so much for our club which is why he is so popular. He is a home town boy who was effectively sold against his will first time out to save us then through love for the club came back to us. Is Nicky B in the same boat? Im not sure although without doubt he is a more talented footballer has he affected the tigers as much? Although you could argue him coming back was a spring board up the leagues in the first place?
Deano should be in that team. I don't agree that Barmby is a more talented player than Deano was, if anything they are both technically very gifted players.
It was very close in cetain positions, indded Windass was close to making the starting xi, but on balance i think strikers work better in partnership and the majority of teams did have Chillo & Waggy, although Deano was up with Keith Edwards as another potential partnership. There are so many permuables with a greatest xi that i could have fielded 3 teams. Another factor is the generation gap, there were a lot of teams who just had players from the last 10 years, or teams of players that played through the 40's 50's and 60's. I think on balance the team submitted is probably a fair reflection of peoples choices.
Deano has got to be in there. If you speak to him when he left to keep the club afloat his heart wasnt in it, but did it for the good of the club. I spoke to him a couple of times in Willie Millers pub in Aberdeen when he was there & he would always say he was enjoying the time at Aberdeen but again didnt want to leave. As he has said in many interviews he could not have been prouder than when he was asked to rejoin city and kept them up then sent them into the premier league for the first time in the clubs history. So how could you leave him out of the all time best 11, I know i couldnt ?!?!?!?!? UTT
i shall see what i canmanage for you. so many players to consider though. and not a single pre-ww2 player among them. not mcnaughton not mills not stevens not any of the smiths not any from when we scored 10 or 11 goals. not any from missing out on division 1 in 1910. almost all the players above are from feelgood eras. a few from the kc stadium rapid rise era, a few from the goals for fun 60s, a few from the upward rush in the 80s, a few from the first post war fun period with carter. almost nobody from 50s 70s 90s. i think the spring was sprung before nicky b arrived and i feel peter taylor never really knew what todo with him so i think he was a bit player in the rise. the next 442 issue will no doubt list the votes and you can see where windass came. i agree his sale will have helped save the club but between 1982 and 2002 we needed saving almost on a weekly basis not just once and then of course again at the end of 2010. irrelevent i know but did you know when windass left in 1995 he had played 16 league games that season and we hadnt won any of them.
7 of my choices in there.. although I doubt many on here would have seen Carter, Jensen & Davidson play.. My dad saw them play he says Davidson was a 'hard' player, very tough tackler", Carter was "brilliant".. haven't asked him about Jensen yet although he was international standard with Denmark and scored a lot of goals as a fullback..
As i siad he was mentioned in a number of selections along with other strikers, but the underlying thread throughout the submitted teams was Waggy & Chillo as a strike partnership. If it was my own personal choice i would have picked Keith Edwards and Stuart Pearson, but it is a collective vote.
Clearly these things are always going to be heavily debated and rightfully so but I actually think that XI is about as close to the nail as we are going to get (Windass would be the most debatable omission).
also true that people tend to have short memories and some people who vote have seen less players. its always like this with the polls that music magazines run about the best 100 albums ever. ive seen them with a top ten full of oasis or radiohead or other and a few years on those albums are gone.
when there was a big vote some years back windass came 4 and that was even before h'ed come back to help keep us up and take us up. other top 16 ones from then that did'nt make the abve X1 were keith edwards 5 whitehurst 7 mcnaughton 11 egd wright 12 houghton 13 butler 14 barmby 15. i dont know whose place windass would take in the X1.
Arguably Windass helped us achieve more than any other player in the clubs history. We avoided relegation to League One, without his goals and input we'd have gone down. The next season we all know happened, and he was he one who stepped up to the plate and banged in the goal which got us up to the top-flight. Most of the city legends on the list deserve their status, but they never achieved what Deano did for us.
its one of the drawbacks of democracy unfortunately. many of the people who are allowd to vote should'nt be allowed near anyting sharp like a pencil.
