We need an experienced, confident CB who is not only going to step in and immediately improve our defence, but also provide leadership. Where are we going to find one of those in January?
They need to drop this age thing and get someone more experienced at CB. Great philosophy and one I admire, but not in our current predicament. We need a couple of older heads to provide some fight and leadership to the rest of the squad. Jansson, Smalling or Cahill would have been great at that, and given us some stability for a couple of seasons whilst we try and bring the younger guns through.
Smalling wouldn’t be a bad shout but even if he considered coming here I think his wage demands would be too much.
Oh I 100% agree. We should have gone all out for Cahill in the summer, even if it meant missing out on Mossa or Che.
I would settle for a journeyman. Someone experienced non-flashy, should be able to walk into the team. Failing that a shop mannequin with fontes face stuck on it. Come to think of it where is fonte now?
And completely wrecked our wage structure? Cahill wouldn’t have taken a cut to come to us, so he’d have been paid way over the rest of the squad. Then we’d have had to match that to keep any really good young players or risk losing them. A tough decision - potentially stay in the PL for a season but have all your best players unhappy due to wage demands ..... unlike the old days, it’s almost impossible to get a “senior” “more experienced” player to lead the youngsters as a club like ours can’t afford them. Sorry - but it drives me crazy
