Assuming no change on the injury front: Bart Richardson Martin Hooiveld Dickson De Ridder Chaplow Morgan Holmes Lambert Forte A tough away double-header follows this, vs burnley and cardiff, so i absoloutely want to see players rested.
I would expect Davis, Fonte, Cork, Lallana and Lambert to be rested. I would expect them to probably be on the bench. All I know is I will be there cheering them on. Weekend games are difficult for me but I haven't missed an evening game for quite some time. Very pleased to see we have three midweek home league games before Christmas.
Bart Richardson, Martin, Hooiveld, Fox Guly, Schneiderlin, Chaplow, Lallana Lambert, De Ridder (De Ridder and Guly possibly switched round) Bench: Davis, Cork, Fonte, Hammond, Reeves, Ward-Prowse, Forte I reckon. I'll probably be way off.
Forgot about Fox being cup tied. With the big 6 using a lot of their reserves and youth players, We have an opportunity to have a good run, so I can't see us taking it too lightly.
Evening Saints supporters and thanks for responding to the article.. I am sure that most pundits and fans will see this game as a home win, many Northend supporters will probably feel the same but will be hoping for some luck and for the Saints to be fielding a weakened team. A Saints weakened team wont mean that PNE will win this game but hopefully give PNE a fighting chance. PNE however will also not be fielding their strongest team and will again be giving the fringe and younger players their chance to get some more playing time under their belt. Phil Brown has said that getting back to the Championship is the No1 target but nevertheless will want to win this game no doubt about it. PNE have several very promising young players that have come through the club youth team, and many of them have already made their first team debut and some have already become part of the first team. Phil Brown will want to play several of these young players in this fixture along with possibly a couple of players returning from injury plus hopefully new signing Daley yet to make his Debut. It will be important to have the right mix of youth and experience though. Bottom line is that there could be a money making game against a Prem side for the winners, so there is a real incentive to go all out for the win. The majority of PNE fans will be hoping for a good performance with the players remaining injury free to continue their attempt to gain promotion, a win would be the icing on the cake.
Whilst we will almost certainly field a different team on Wednesday, I wouldn't hold much hope of it being necessarily weaker. After all, it's not just about 11 for us, we have an honest, hard working group of professionals who are together as one, and who all want to be on the bus. Competition for places at Saints is stiff, and those who haven't been starting regularly in the league will have a point to prove. It's a seriously tough game for PNE, but it is also not an easy game for Saints, and we will not underestimate you. Nige will make sure of that.
Should be a Saints win, but the great thing about cups is that anything can happen. If that wasn't true, there would be no point in playing. You'd just ask ManU and Chelsea to play off for it. Nigel Adkins would be cross if any Saints player didn't treat the opposition with respect.
Hi! ChrisMarsdenFootballGenius. It does sound very much like there are strong similarities between the two playing squads, except that the Saints are atop the Championship and PNE are doing their best to do the same in Div 1.. Competition for places is also stiff at Deepdale and like the Saints players the PNE chosen 11 will be looking to impress the manager, so a fully comitted game is on the cards. It would be a mistake to underestimate PNE and I am sure that Nige will not be doing that..

It's hard not to sound arrogant, but I just cannot see anything other than a Saints win. Our whole squad just oozes quality and there's 20+ players who could slot into our first team without any problems. I respect the fact Preston are on a great run at the moment and have their tales up, and whilst we musn't underestimate our opponents, I just don't forsee them to be getting anything from the game... But as others have previously stated thus is the beauty of the cup! - anything can happen, and I'm buzzing about the prospect of penalties already haha. But still, I'm gonna go for a 3-0 home win. Do you have an inclin of how many PNE will be bringing down, Theflyingplumber? Obviously won't be a lot seeing as it's a Wednesday night and it's a long old trip down but hopefully they'll create a good bit of noise! Good luck in the league this season, League One can be a real toughie to get out of but you've made a good start so long may that continue
Oh dear oh Dear......I do remember Charlie Wayman...........Certainly did not know too much about football in those days. I do remember chanting "up the middle for Charlie though" because the big boys did! I clearly remember being 8 points clear and still not getting promotion. Although I did not have a clue what promotion meant in those days. It was however the start of a lot of debates in our family at the time. (Half being Pompey fans the other half Saints and that included me) It went around amongst the supporters that the saints board were frightened for us to get promoted. Especially when Charlie was injured, because Saints didn't get a replacement in to cover for him. It was assumed because they wouldn't be able to afford another player or better players. The next time it happened it was even more rife and even made one of the papers of that time. That rumour stayed with Saints well into the 60's
3-0 saints win Bart Butterfield Martin Hooiveld Harding De Ridder Schneiderlin Chaplow Holmes Forte Lambert SUBS: Davis, Dickson, Reeves, Ward-Prowse, Hoskins, Lallana, Guly
An interesting insight about Charlie Wayman and Southampton FC. But also and importantly a personal account into how the Saints fans viewed this apparent reluctance, to bring in a replacement by the club with promotion there for the taking. Funny old game football ain't it. I would add that a club standing accused of not wanting promotion by it's fans is not an unusual event in my experience, and has been levelled at PNE on one or two occasions in the past. Thanks for the comments Beddytare..
You dont sound arrogant at all TheRedStripeSupremacy, PNE fans would be feeling equally confident if the circumstances were reversed I am sure, it would seem strange if a Saints fan was predicting a PNE win... As previously mentioned PNE fans are far more interested in getting out of Div 1 than progressing further in the Carling cup, but they will be hoping for a decent professional performance at St Marys. I am confident that PNE will grab a top six position come the end of the season but you never know and there is a long way to go as yet. I think PNE had about 200/250 fans down at Charlton in the last round, but that was followed a few days later by another trip down to the smoke last Saturday when PNE had about 850/1000 at Griffin Park so yet another and even longer trip to Southampton wont see all that many fans making the trip to be honest... I hope your season ends in promotion and you are able to turn Bleakpoo over on the way..
