Since I collected pre 1947 coins in 60's & 70's before selling them in the early 80's to buy an OLYMPUS camera and accessories ... I started again a few years ago and have quite a collection probably worth a few £000's. As an investment for the grand kids I have regularly purchased Royal Mint "SILVER PRODUCTIONS" like Paddingtons and Hawking etc .. I read an article recently about the use of coin [ with the latest swipe to buy on your card feature ] likely in the next few years to limit the use of coin by as much as 30-40%! Indeed no looking in your change for some 2017/18/19 coins as the mint /BOE never issued any! this has caused the royal Mint to diversify … releasing "legal tender" coins that cost more than face value to acquire that you would be foolish to spend them. Years ago certain coins were released at face value in presentation sleeves … now similar value issues cost 8x - 26x plus face value in a presentation sleeve. they now do jewellery and a boat load of other " not to be spent coins " / not released to general circulation. This sort of takes away the gilt on the ginger bread in finding one in your change. the ABC coins, how lucky were you to get a complete set of either or both years? I purchased /recycled over £2000 of 10p coins[ 10p are in £100 bags ] over the last couple of years in sealed bank bags from banks post office I have only found 2 ABC coins both 2018 E and Y because Royal mint dealers get first call [ or provided with a certain amount at a premium? ] how many years before we stop using coins I wonder?
My late father in law was a collector and we have his collection in the roof gathering dust. No idea about it myself but apparently there is a Henry VIII sovereign amongst it which is quite valuable. I really need to get it valued and sold, so that we can realise the money and someone else can enjoy the collection.
how many coins? HENRY 8 SOV from about £5k ! My interest is half crowns from 1816 and florins from 1849 example …. a halfcrown run from 1900 to 1919 [20 coins ] absolute minimum value would be +£850 ! ( a couple are quite expensive ) 1947 to 1967 about £20 but would need to be nice coins ….. my most expensive coin is valued currently @£600 & most expensive halfcrown in treble figures.
Sorry JGF I simply don’t have the same passion as you do for the coins. I will get around to selling them one day but that’s it for me - sorry I just don’t feel it
