Perhaps you should look up what surely means, hears a clue "used to emphasise the speaker's firm belief that what they are saying is true". So it is my belief, I'm not quoting anyone. And your "experts" are generation citizen, a small group in New York who think differently to the rest of the world.

LOL. You clearly didn't follow the link & read it then, did you? Here's a clue: Professor Hart. Isn't a Professor expert enough for you? Or the supporting study published by Edinburgh University? I'm no expert myself, but looking forward to reading the evidence you provide to sway my thinking. :)

Btw, I'm perfectly aware of the definition of surely, & I'm also aware of your 'firm belief'. But no matter what you call it, it's still unclear what you base that opinion on.

I clearly did follow and read the link, looks like you are the one that didn't read it. I suppose 16 year old Oliver York is another of your experts.

My opinion is based on the fact that under 10 countries in the world don't allow under 18's to vote in national elections, but perhaps the world is wrong and you and Hart are right. I do not have to provide evidence to sway your thinking, you are fully entitled to be happy being wrong.

Oh, I don't claim to be right. That's your department. I simply have an evidence-based opinion. End of.

But let's look at the basis of your opinion. I tried to ask you how you formed your opinion, and all you can do is use a few words you found in the link I sent you, which is a simple statement of fact - not evidence. Not even close. Based on this, it's clear that you're not a progressive. Your opinion is effectively based on the status quo. Now just think on that for a minute. Everyone else does it, so it must be right! Quite a mantra.

If everything was based on the status quo, there would be no need for change, would there?

    - No need for Brexit - maintain the status quo. Oh, wait a minute ... !
    - No need to abolish slavery - everyone else does it. Long live the status quo!
    - No need for toleration of gays - we've got status quo!
    - No need for for antibiotics - We prefer to die. Long live status quo!
    - (Relax, I won't go on. It would take aeons to list all the examples)

The only decent thing about Status Quo was that they knocked out a good few tunes! Then again, they shouldn't have - no-one else in the world at large wrote songs like that. Perhaps they should have adhered to the status quo too?

Isn't it funny that the older generation are the ones to teach, educate and instruct the younger generation in just about everything on earth, including new technology, new ideas and social behaviour..................I think they call it experience, qualified, educated and knowledgeable.

My my, an 84 year old inventor, and it's got to do with words, spelling, meanings, definitions, descriptions, includes social behaviour and new ideas......who'd of thunk it hey.

You probably need to read the piece a bit more closely before you claim victory for the over 80's

He invented the game in 1958, when he was 23? and the game was commercialised by others and the app developed by others as well so not quite the message you were hoping for I guess?

He had the know how to eventually perfect it at the ripe old age of 84, which completely dismisses dbc's claim about the elderly.

You need to analyse and read what dbc wrote before going on your searches to try and debunk me.

However, just to help you out, and understand a bit better what dbc was on about.

Sorry I only read the document that you listed in your post I didn't look any further than that. I wasn't trying to debunk you, you did that all by yourself.

    Interesting articles LL (genuinely)

The age distribution of the links provided show a typical age of 30-40 for major innovations through the ages and a little higher for current ones in the US. Reality is the spread is similar and the numbers of guys in the older age groups tail off significantly. Conclusions? You need experience and opportunity. Many of them will be ‘life’s work’, obsessive people who have tried numerous solutions and worked through trial error and refinement before final success... ie it doesn’t typically happen overnight.

Even so, The great break throughs in society are less likely to come from the old. Obviously, in current times, if they have retired they are by definition not in a job... they have time on their hands but less resource available to them.

I think the surge in inventors clubs in the states is great. Retired guys tinkering with **** in their sheds is a wonderful thing and long may it continue to keep their minds active... but it’s not where the main sources of ‘innovation’ are happening in the world. The fact that it warrants a news story if an 80 year old invents something tells you all you need to know.

interestingly in that first link it showed that the US innovators were heavily skewed towards immigrants (has donny tango read the link I wonder) and the highly educated... two groups not highly thought of on this thread!

I'd let them vote though, as they obviously know what they are talking about. Then I'd stop anybody who hasn't come up with a patentable idea or an app from having the opportunity to influence the workings of government.

They were American immigrants. The good ones go there, we get the rubbish ones.

But Trump doesn’t like immigrants.. although he seems to like brits. So maybe we could trade them for some of our disaffected Anglo Saxons. He likes them and they like him. Could be a win win as part of this great trade deal we’re going to have.

I admit it I'm an obsessive I like reading and questioning and wondering what the hell is going on and that's all I did. If you don't want people to read or look at what you post then stop doing it.

Wasn't about immigrants, inventions are about the people who toiled and persisted to overcome failures to make their inventions work, even if it takes years, and many of the elderly did just that. Migrant or age has nothing to do with inventions.

Those figures of 30 to 40 to the elderly clearly show the elderly are not drop dead zombies but have the knowledge, education and experience to keep going.

By the way, if you have 99 40 yr olds, and 1 33 yr old then you have a 30 to 40 yr old bracket.

How do you know the great breakthroughs in society today are less likely to come from the old, do you have a crystal ball?

By the way, the world wide web was invented by a 39 yr old Brit.
