Been a while since I owned my place in Florida, & things may well have changed, but in my experience, energy was more expensive than over here, and gas had risen so much that it was very similar to here. I'd be very surprised if the prices had trended downwards in the last 5 years.
Isn't Aussie a bit like New Zealand, lots of wood burners and Gas guzzling Holden cars, my local rubbish tip, re-cycles something like 80% of stuff dumped there, and we have re-cycling rubbish bins, unless Aussie has changed massively in last few years it's not even close.

Wood is renewable, growing it locks in current CO2 and so providing you are growing the stuff then all is good. We don't make Holdens anymore but you're right we do have some people who drive around in 4x4 with no particular need for them, you know Chelsea Tractors. We recycle too, but the best option is not to produce crap in the first place and I have to admit there you have us at a disadvantage you lot are historically world champions at that.

It takes a minimum 20 years grow a tree, you could also argue coal and oil are renewable eventually,it's not a green energy and worldwide deforestation is probably the biggest cause of the rise in global warming. Just looked it up, and Australia has lost 40% of it's Forests and is in the worlds worst 11 countries for deforestation, so burning wood isn't in any way acceptable if you care about global warming.
It's not an argument, it's a fact and, to use a double negative, we're not doing nothing, we've reduced our carbon emissions by over 50% since 1990. The cost of renewables, which are incredibly uneconomic, is making our energy a luxury item. The answer is nuclear but the tree huggers don't want that either. On top of all of this you have to consider the argument that the increase in CO2 could be a consequence of warming. Also that we are not addressing the more potent contributors to warming, like water vapour and methane. We don't because you can't question it. It's like a religion. If you question it you're a denier. I want the government to make it easier for me to go greener, for example: A couple of us wanted to visit a mate who has just moved back to the UK from Germany, he's 10 miles past Plymouth. I looked at the train which was £95 return for a super off peak! That's just London to Plymouth each. It's cheaper to fly. My diesel car does 60 mpg so I couldn't afford to be greener. London to Leeds is even more.
