Who the **** decided to offer him a 4 year contract extension after he had just missed the previous 2 years due to injury. He has been injured now for 4 years and his contract still runs until 2021

And the fact aswell he is our 10th choice midfielder when fit

Tbf if we are keeping him around we should fund physiotherapist qualifications for him and encourage him down that route. He will understand more than anyone from the players perspective how it is to be injured and will have spent so much time with Dave Rennie who is one of the best. If it interested him and he is naturally bright enough (seems to be from when I’ve seen him speak) then it could work. Just my random thoughts on it for a Saturday morning anyway.

Same team as Southampton. I’m worried about this one as we are being hyped up so much that it could cause a fall and with Palace being our nemesis. Rodgers has broken the Bournemouth curse we had though so why not Palace as well.

Impressive performance full of confidence and intention. Unfortunately it' was a case of 'normal service resumed' for Barnes. Should have been subbed earlier. Gray made a good impression when he came on and a great piece of work to create the second goal. Soyuncu gets better with every game and thoroughly deserved his goal.

Excellent stuff. Tricky fixture for us, overcome with some style ... bring on the Goons.

Gray and Barnes keep doing the same thing. Blowing their big chance to make a shirt there own and when you think they arent quite good enough they will put in a real good performance

They need to kick on else I suspect they will find Rodgers going into the market for another winger

Great result although didn't think we played that well. Some of the passing was very sloppy. Not sure I agree about Barnes, other than one chance where a heavy touch ruined it he got very little service. Chilwell was very quiet and things seemed to go up the middle or through Perez. Gray is turning into a great impact sub although I am sure he would rather be starting but currently not going to get in before Perez. Don't recall Schmeichel having a quieter away game, even Southampton forced a couple of saves. Previously struggled against Palace so another bogey bites the dust.

The trouble with Barnes is that in some matches he doesn't even try to go past his defender. Brendan says he lacks confidence and needs to stamp some authority into his game. The only way he'll build his confidence is by trying to do what all good wingers should do. Nobody expects him to beat his opponent every time, but it would be a shame if he fails to make it because he's too scared to give it a real go.

It’s how it goes. At Southampton we went a lot down the left and Chilwell/Barnes were immense. Yesterday we went more down the right so Perez, Ricardo and Tielemans were more involved playing between themselves. I do think we need a top winger but Gray has been very good off the bench and Barnes will only get better with games to get his confidence up.
    Soyuncu what a man!

It's catch 22. Barnes has to perform in order to get picked. While it might dent his confidence if he's dropped then he has to show the mental toughness and character to come back and start playing with self-belief. We can't carry passengers if we really want to challenge for a top 4 place.
Agree about Soyuncu. We have improved so much in defence with Maguire gone. Maguire is too slow to be a central defender. He should start looking at a William Carvalho role in front of the back 4 and making the best use of the skills he possesses.

Centre halfs dont need pace if they can read the game. Robert Huth was slow but read the game so well that he was rarely caught out for his pace

Robert Huth was a much better defender than Harry Maguire, who gets caught out of position too often.

Thats not because of his pace though. As I said for the last 2 and half years. Maguire is a very good defender. Nothing more, nothing less. He isnt world class and at £85M we have well and truly ripped Man U off

The point I was making was that Maguire's positional sense isn't good enough to make up for his lack of pace. And, agreed, we have got a much better price than we could have hoped for. But when you read that they're considering Declan Rice who could cost up to £80 million then Maguire was good value for them.

Agree, Maguires faster than Huth, but Huth positioned himself better.

Don't agree that Maguire was good value, £80m is still steep for Maguire, but like Maguire, WHU don't need to sell Rice.

If Mourinho had got Woodward to dig into his pockets and spend £60m last year on Maguire, then you could argue they got better value for money.

Same with Chelseas possible £150m "spending spree"

They will probably get, at most, 2 of those players for £150m.

Just because big clubs have money to spend doesn't mean clubs are forced to sell, which is why some of the big 6 are failing. The times of feeder clubs in the PL has gone, you can't throw money at a problem anymore, its much more down to the correct recruitment.
