Swansea Council have banned Chubby Brown from appearing at the Grand Theatre. They seem to think that it would be in bad taste. ...... In the past he has appeared there several times, and has always been a sell out. ...... People seem to be very upset, and already have a large petition on the go.
What do you here think of this ban? .... Personally I think the Council have it wrong, and let it up to the people to go if they want, if people don't like him they don't have to go.

P.S. I hope it is ok to post this here.

He is a vile man that we could do without TBH.....I'm all for banning him TBH....Why anyone would call his show entertainment is a joke and we are not the only city and town who thinks they are better than that. Swansea are right to ban him....

I find this comment vile, should you be banned because I don't like it?

Ever heard of free speech? You have but it was a long time ago? It's just a comedy show FFS.

That's common sense. Also a distant memory.

Yeah, same here - whilst I find what Chubby Brown does hugely fails at being comedy, is mostly crass, offensive and done for shock value and is definitely not 'art', I have the option of not buying a ticket. Banning something this way is setting a bit of a precedence and a few more of the 'old school' performers may feel the effect. I must admit that I haven't even heard anything from him since the 90's but I'm fairly confident it's of the same low brow content.

However, if I was employed there, then I wouldn't really have much of a choice in listening to it - this will be the situation for the people running the sound/lighting etc. I feel sympathy for anyone who doesn't really have the choice in this case but I'm sure they'll live.

We don’t have Free Speech in this Country - what we have is ‘Free Speech within (the letter of) the law’.... <cheers>

Just imagine if he was a member of this forum, ... what a thought, He would drive some people up the wall.
To others it would be hilarious. A load of people would want to join this forum, including members from
Swansea Council. We would be the talk of the football world . ..... on second thoughts it may better if we planted him on Planet Swans. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

That's not the case here though. His show isn't breaking the law or it would be banned from all theatres and venues.

    p.s. pedantic git

Presumably, the council have ownership/control of the Grand Theatre and can therefore decide who they will allow to use their premises? They could also not wish to allow his use of their premises since it can be construed that they approve of him and his show.

Before the internet and social media People only saw him vary rarely on the TV and his material was like some other comedians with innuendos and close to the knuckle stuff and that was fine, But when people saw him live then a lot of people would leave after 10 minutes because the things he said and took the piss out of was so disgusting and vile that it was not entertaining at all....His popularity went to pot and he was banned from appearing on TV again and he was lucky to ever work again. Some people loved his stuff while others thought it was distasteful the way he would talk about the disabled for one example calling them Spastics and should be put down. I would not open my curtains if he was performing in my back garden, I have standards way way above his and so do most people.

And that's why society's going down the toilet. Self interested greed. It's lucky you're a "socialist" <laugh>

We all have our opinions and views, which must be respected. If I don't like, and don't want to see anything, I can't see how I can tell anybody that.you can't . We must respect the right of others to have an opinion that differs from ours. Shame that things don't seem to work like that anymore.

He’s not my cup of tea but he should not have been banned. Freedom of speech is an important facet of democracy and also I don’t want those thick tw@‘s at the council making decisions for me

Whatever your taste is, it’s the fact that the views of the many are being affected by the liberal limp wristed views of the few. Makes me sick that almost every day they’re conjuring up something to be offended by. If you don’t like it, just don’t go!!

I’ve seen Chubby twice live here in Swansea. The first time I missed half the jokes as I was pissing myself at the previous. I enjoyed the second time, about 10-15 years later, but not at all to the same degree, it was just I’d moved on. Everyone has a shelf life...

I wouldn’t go out out of my way to see him now, but if people still want to they should be able to. Should we be surprised by the council, of course not!! Do they do anything right for Swansea...

Also, if you feel you can’t say so & so nowadays. Just look online at Ricky Gervais’ take on it all, whether you like him or not, he’s spot on...

I saw chubby in the grand years ago he was funny but after half hour of cnut this n cnut that it got a bit boring between the funny stuff so not bothered to see the same routine again out of free choice but others should have the right to see him like I had if they choose too !
But Bernard manning a few times up the Trallwyn club was a lot funnier and also non pc but I would pay to see him every year if he was still around ! Fekin hysterical he was.
There are very few modern era proper comedians about as the non funny pc ****er brigade have taken over tv .
Frankie Boyle is funny as few live, but cos he wouldn't tow the line on tv and mock the week when it was worth watching. They binned him ! But he has recently started appearing on tv because he has promised to be a good boy for the money and has sold out ! You can see the deadness in his eyes spouting the pc script he's go to dish out on there now !
Ricky Gervaise is about the last one that tells it as it is now and is also great live. He is very rich now so doesn't have to give a **** about the tv mob binning him as he doesn't need them. So the ice he's skating on at the pc tv cnuts is a bit thicker than Frankies !
Don't go there on yank comedy ! They are **** compared to brit stuff !

Sad that. I thought he had some balls at least. It looks to me though like he is sincere with the BS, not that he's doing it just to get on telly. I think he believes it.

I was watching a few of his gigs on Youtube recently and you can see a big difference in the older stuff to the more recent. He sounds tired now and offensive to the audience for the sake of it, whereas his put downs used to be really funny.

It seems Jim Davidson has been banned from a few venues including St David's Hall in Cardiff. He says it's because they accuse him of being rude to staff, they say his show isn't commercially viable.
I worked with Jim Davidson over a decade ago on a ship - and he was a horrible ****. He spoke to people like ****. Staff complained and he wasn't invited back again. I know its not the same situation as Chubby Brown, but they are both from that 'old school' comedy circuit.
