That's nor what happened though - the first picture was Bobby's armpit, but showed it behind the Villa knee: then they scrambled about with the angle of the lines, not where they adjoined to, and suddenly Bobby was offside.
Reminds me of Luis Garcia's goal against Chelsea in the Champions League, one channel tried their hand at early 3d computer graphics from a still shot to predict the ball not crossing the line. As they rotated the angle on their early 3d graphics you could see the ball moving backwards to not cross the line. It was clear it had crossed the line but they decided it hadn't before doing the graphics so had to make the graphic fit their call, so the ball moved as they rotate the picture.
That was CL and WC iirc, and I think the PL are doing it differently and telling them to flag but not blowing.
Thanks for that. Out of interest I just checked the PL website it says (paraphrasing) where there's a clear and obvious goalscoring opportunity and he's not sure it's offside, he's to delay raising the flag until that phase of play is over. If it's clearly offside he flags. So in Firmino's case how could the linesman have thought he was 'clearly' offside when he clearly wasn't. It's one of the most annoying things about the officiating for me - when they make stuff up. It's very easy to miss something but to flag or whistle for something that never happened is so frustrating.
Fair enough I must be mistaken, sure I read that somewhere after our Burnley match when they got a goal reviewed though the flag went up a fair bit of time before. They may have changed it though, as you say they tend to make it up as they go along most of the time.
Referee for Liverpool vs Manchester City confirmed as Michael Oliver - but where is Martin Atkinson? Michael Oliver will take charge of Liverpool's clash with Man City https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/spo...referee-liverpool-vs-manchester-city-17199157
While I was on the website I had a read of the Q&A's. It states that the PL voted overwhelmingly for the introduction of VAR. I wonder what they're all thinking now
I remember that. The technology used was what two separate documentaries employed to 1) Prove Kennedy was shot from the grassy knoll and 2) He wasn't.
They really do make it up as they go along. Check out Mane's goal that was disallowed at The Emirates last season - that linesman disallowed that goal because he simply didn't know the rules. Fackt.
Don't get me going on that. Cut out all the ifs and maybes of last season, we actually did win the league (in that we actually did enough to win it) with that goal. It was a legitimate goal and 2 points were taken from us by an incompetent official.
In the CL, they're definitely more hesitant to flag unless they're absolutely certain. Play goes on. If there's a goal, VAR checks. If no goal, who cares. If that's the way they're running it in the PL too, I would argue by asking what's the point of a lino then? Just take them off and VAR check everything. The offside rule is a complete joke and has been for years. I remember the expression, 'clear daylight', being used. Someone else here mentioned about if things are tight then it was meant to be benefit to the attacker (we're literally the opposite now), we've had this whole 'natural body' shape thing, silhouettes, second phase of play, bodypart which you can legally score from, whatever else. Absolute shambles. Why can't they just whack a GPS tracker onto every player's chest (not shirt) and use that? Not even Atkinson can **** that up.
And one in the ball too! Yes, I've wondered that for a long time. All it takes is a transmitter and three (or more for redundancy) receivers and you can triangulate exactly where everyone is and have a computer decide if onside or not, and whether ball crosses line or not, etc. Sew the transmitter in the shirt in the same place for each player. Use that for determining onside or not.
Wouldn't they need a transmitter in the toe of each boot, each shoulder and Bobby would need one in his arm pit.
It was actually a genuine suggestion ...not expensive or complicated. Far more accurate than VAR, far less contentious or ambiguous, zero room for interpretation, instant results - just like goal line technology is - and thus (and here's the beauty for all those who want the excitement back that 4min VAr decisions have brought) quicker decisions and gameplay! Nope, just keep it simple. It was brought in to stop attackers gaining an unfair advantage - i.e. goal hanging. I'm pretty certain no one would agree that Firmino was trying to gain an unfair advantage by having his armpit beyond the defender's knee. Shove it on an under vest (like the training ones all clubs have) and job done, won't even be flapping in the breeze to cause complications.
By current rules, but I'd propose just base it on one transmitter. That one part of you has to be inside. Makes things simpler and more robust.
