Son went in from behind with no chance of winning the ball. It was tactical assault. The fact he only meant to hurt him a little bit and hurt him a lot isn't a defence.

The problem with off the ball challenges is there's no ball to take some of the impact. The problem with cowardly slides from behind is there's no chance to see it coming.

What's the purpose of the straight red in the modern game if breaking an opponents leg doesn't get you one then? Nothing?

BTW Son should have had a yellow for diving anyway so he should have been off in any case. The number of people in the media crying about Son missing a couple of games is a joke.

 

It’s ridiculous. Just about every firm tackle ever made potentially endangers the other player - or even the tackler for that matter. What Son did was stupid, but it was not malicious or reckless. I feel sorry for Gomes, but no way is that ever a red card offence.

Astroball is having its international break this week.
Liverpool are just one result away from winning their 24th back to back Astroball title, and have still maintained their 100% disciplinary record, not a single yellow card since 1962.
I remember that game of Astroball a few years back, where that Chelsea player, Ivanovic, got sent off for putting his forearm in Luis Suarez's mouth....good times!
