Last year our away from was atrocious. It would appear that thus far we've not improved that one jot. Oh things may not go our way all the time and yes luck evens out but I've not seen a radical departure from the issues that beset us on the road last year. 7 players in and we still don't put the effort and drive into away games. Why do we play so poorly away from home?
League only we have played 5 with 3 away games winning 1 and losing 2. IMO not enough games played to say our away form is bad. Also the away win was against Arsenal.
If we lost 2 of every 3 away games (rounding down) in a season, and won all of our home games then we'd end up on: 73 points. If we won all of our home games and drew all of our remaining away games we'd end up on: 89 points.
Point being we could win the next lets say 5 away games we could also lose them it's to early in the season to say our away form is poor. Stoke, Arsenal and Spurs away are difficult games.
Yeah I agree. The problem is our away from in recent seasons has been terrible and there seems to be no sign of improvement.
Not at the moment, I hope that changes. At this point all we can do is hope but I'm also encouraged by some of the performances this season.
To be honest UIR you're making yourself look a bit of a dick, constantly making sly digs. Why not save it for the banter thread?
I was being serious. Away form isnt all that important as long as you maintain your home form. Of course losing every away game is not what I mean but picking up a few wins and some draws will be plenty. Im just saying that last season people went mad over away form and in the end it showed to have little impact.
some points here are quite valid, some in my opinion are not. 1. yes if we've good home form and bad away we could get into the europa league but we are not goingt o win them all! 2. yes its early but do we see a big difference yet? nope. arsenal away well lets just say thats great to break the hoodoo but its not evidence of a change. 3. away form affects confidence and puts pressure on the team. we should be loving it not buckling under it. 4. I hope its not a trend but with last season in there i can only see a consistent issue away from hom so the arsenal game is not really enough... I expect us to breeze past brighton and wolves almost and then run into a wall inthe next away game sadly.
You will hate me for saying this (in fact I hate myself for saying it ) but the 1 thing I grudgingly admire Manure for is that they tend to play the same away from home as they do at home.Admittedly it didn't work for them last season but in general they go away from home, start off at a fast pace and can be a couple of goals up before you know it. Now why is it we cannot have the same frame of mind. When Rafa was in charge we played for a point before we had kicked off with his team selections and although it made us difficult to beat we didn't win many either. Over this season I expect a to see far more positive displays away from Anfield. It's better to win one and loose two than draw 2 and loose one.
I think we did a few things that conspired to our bad pefromances last year... 1) Roys apparent lack of trying to win an away game. We played like we were hoping to nick the 1st goal and defend from there on... 2) We were very light up front. Torres was wanting away or just out of form. Makes no difference which one you choose. Ngog wasnt the answer. Kuyt hasnt been a forward for a long time now, he's played wide more thimes than most. 3) We havnt had the tricky players that could unlock a home defence of 10 men behind the ball. Its been like that though for a while though, other than Gerrard threading balls through to Torres we didnt have anyone else. 4) A real lack of pace in the team, in passing and also in the players. You need pace in your side and have the ability to move the ball quickly. We didnt have any. As for this year i think we are still looking at the same problem, although we have had a toughish start. Arsenal, Stoke and Spurs are game we should look to be competing in and maybe winning with the right tactics. Arsenal was a good perfromance and to be honest we deserved that win. Stoke, well all i will say is how many teams will do to Stoke what we did in terms of beating them in every department other than in the one thing that matters. We battered them really. Then that brings us onto Spurs...!!! Dont really know what to say other than can we move on please. It was a perfromance that no one would envisage, and so we will have to hope for now that it was a one off. We have a long way to go at the moment but im confident that we can and will get back to winning ways... Too early to write the away games off yet...
ps - The away form of Man utd and playing the same way everywhere they go is wrong... Granted 5-6 years ago Fergie thought that his way was the way forward in both the league and in europe. His, 'my team is better than yours' type of mentality, cost him some big wins on his travels. Soon he started with the lone striker and played a more patient way of football. Now its started to pay dividends with 3 Champions league finals in quick succesion. That form has been brought into the leaqgue now and he isnt as attacking as he was in the past. Certainly against us and Chelsea he dosnt open up as he will get done, and has over the past 3 years at Anfield...
