any of you out there dab hands at decorating? The time is here for me to redecorate the whole house. I decorated before we moved in, went with wallpaper that could be painted. Need to do ceilings walls etc. What is the best way to paint the ceilings? roller? but this gets everywhere can you use gloss paint for ceilings? as i want to cover up hairline cracks in the plaster. any tips/advice welcome cheers
gloss paint is for window ledges and skirting, I wouldnt use it on the ceiling, use an emulsion. A roller is fine, just buy plastic sheets from B&Q and put them everywhere and you'll be fine. Get one of the decorating suits aswell they're like a fiver and will save you getting paint over clothes/your hair etc
I was going to use decorators caulk to fill the cracks and then use emulsion. I am actually not bad at DIY/decorating. It was just that i thought glos would negate the need for the caulk The mistake i made was that the ceilings are artex, and i should have just had them skimmed. But at the time was in a rush. A lot harder now to get it done without having to repaper etc
we had an extension 9 years ago and all the rooms were decorated at the same time, now they all need doing again. with only me and my mum to do it
How many cracks in the artex do you have? I don't envy you that job. To be honest if you want rid of the artex it might be worthwhile just skimming it and taking the hit on the new wallpaper, it will save you a headache in years to come if you are planning on staying in the same property for the foreseeable future.
at least you got your mum jen my other half is useless, as are the kids (young uns excluded). I will have to do it during the night for the most part so its dryish when they get up I dont mind decorating if i can move stuff, or if its an empty house. In this case its neither and going to have to cover evrything up i can just see me geting paint on th eleather suite/LCD tele
we're quite a good team, i like doing the walls and ceiling and she does the sanding and glossing of the skirting boards. maybe we should start a business.
Just cover the ceiling in glass, then you never have to paint it again, plus it makes the room look bigger.
Roller the ceilings. Keep a wet cloth near by and put sheets down. Paint will scrape off wooden floors but a lot easier if you have sheets down. Some ceilings have chemicals in the paint that bubble when you paint over them. My house was mid 80s and I rollered the ceiling 4 times, after sanding the bastard down numerous times. Roll and use a small roller for cutting in, you'll have a room done in 30 mins
its all the ceilings in the house including hallway. apart from kitchen and downstairs bathroom (although they need painting) and its a 4 bed 2 bathroom affair hence the looking for an easy option. I tend to use traders gloss when using gloss, as it is pliable and tends to cover up the cracks/imperfvtions in wood etc. emulsion just doesnt do that I did think it would be weird, and in the past i have seen/come across gloss on walls and realise the nightmare of going over it etc
artex ceilings are a pain in the **** , get a plasterer in to bond and skim all the ceilings and then paint them in a vinyl matt (white)
