Both clubs received a bye to the third round of the competition due to their involvement in the 2011-12 UEFA Europa League. This will be the 81st time the two teams have met and their first match against each other in the Football League Cup. The first meeting came at the Victoria Ground when Stoke City were playing as Stoke FC in the old first round of the FA Cup in February 1896 in a match Stoke won 5-0. Stoke became one of the 12 founding members of the Football League in 1888 and the clubs were drawn together in the third round of the FA Cup in February 1899 at the Victoria Ground with Stoke winning 4-1. The first match at White Hart Lane between the clubs was a friendly played in March 1900 with Spurs, then Champions of the Southern League, beating Stoke 6-0. Spurs joined the Football League for the 1908-09 season, replacing Stoke who had resigned at the end of the previous season for financial reasons. The clubs didn't meet in a League match until April 1920 in the Second Division with Tottenham winning 2-0 at the Lane and 3-1 at the Victoria Ground. The first meeting in Division One came in March 1923 at Stoke which resulted in a 0-0 draw. Spurs won the reverse fixture at the Lane a week later 3-1. The clubs met for five seasons in the Second Division between 1928 to 1933 and for two seasons in Division One from 1934 to 1935. After the Second World War, the clubs met in the modern FA Cup third round in January 1947 at White Hart Lane which resulted in a 2-2 draw with Stoke winning the replay 1-0 thanks to a Stanley Matthews goal. Three years later, Spurs beat Stoke 1-0 away in the third round. Spurs were Football League Champions in 1950-51 and beat Stoke 6-1 at home but could only draw 0-0 away during that season. Every League game played between Spurs and Stoke since WW2 has taken place in the Top Flight, except for season 1977-78 when Spurs spent a single season in Division Two, beating Stoke 3-1 in both matches. The clubs met in the FA Cup in January 1976 with a 1-1 draw at the Lane followed by a 2-1 win for Stoke in the replay. Tottenham Hotspur were founder members of the Premier League in 1992-93 but Stoke City's first season in the competition came in 2008-09 with Stoke winning 2-1 at the Britannia Stadium and Spurs winning 3-1 at the Lane. During 2009-10, Stoke won 1-0 at White Hart Lane with Spurs winning 2-1 at the Britannia. Last season, Spurs did the "double" over Stoke, winning the away fixture 2-1 with a brace of goals from Gareth Bale and the home fixture 3-2 in April with a brace from Peter Crouch and a Luka Modric goal. Peter Crouch moved to Stoke City during the summer along with fellow team-mates Jonathan Woodgate and Wilson Palacios, where they joined another former Spurs player, Matthew Etherington. I've checked the TV listings and can't find this game. It looks like it'll a cracking match to watch on the big screen; please tell me the lack of coverage is not true.

Ledley can now be rested for the cup games and only focus on the prem matches with any two of Gallas/Bassong/Kaboul in the CB position, with the 3rd on the bench. And Parker will have Sandro pushing for a first team place. Competition between these two can only breed improvement, IMO.
Reckon it'll look something like: Gomes (although I'd rather have Carlo, Gomes isn't a strong character, even when he was first choice he made enough mistakes, now he's third, his concentration is gonna be all over the place... Not looking forward to him being in between the sticks to be honest). Charlie---Gallas (if fit)---Bassong---Townsend Rafa---Sandro---Livermore---Falque Gio Pav (although I'd rather play Kane and see how does as a lone striker, Pav in my opinion has been tripe and although the "experience card" will be used by some, his experience has done f*ck all so far for us). If Stoke have a full strength squad out, I can't see us progressing to be honest, though if they rest a few of their first teamers which will probably be likely due to their Europa participation, they're definitely there for the taking in my eyes. If Stoke field their first team, then they'll be knackered, SoS. They looked like they were struggling against Sunderland after the long trip to Kiev midweek, so I think that Pulis has to make changes.
I reckon it'll be a bit stronger than that, SoS, as it'll go to a penalty shootout if we draw. I think it'll be similar to yesterdays team with about 3-4 players changed.

Seems unlikely given the Tweet from the OS, Solid. Even if the players that they've named are the only changes, that's still 7. I'd be surprised if Dos Santos isn't involved either, as he's getting time off the bench.
Hard to say. I'd try to have quite a strong team as I don't like the idea of sacrificing the cup games if it can be avoided. Id probably like something along the lines of: -------------Friedel------------ --Corluka--Gallas--Kaboul--BAE-- VDV--Livermore--Sandro--Townsend ---------Defoe----Pav--------- Subs: Carlo, Bassong, Walker, Ade, Gio, Modric, Kane Rest some of the big guns for the prem games and have some on the bench to change the dynamics if needed. Keep Friedel and BAE in as they can play more games in a row than Rooney on acid. Playing Pav and the young players against weaker opposition never seems to get us goals, Stoke will walk all over us. VDV and Defoe will add the attacking flair with a strong back 4 and Sandro keeping their attackers at bay. But what 'Arry will do is a completely different matter. Edit: By the way, I rethought the "only change 3-4 players" thing. Thats probably not a very good idea...

Think that looks about the team,although i think Sandro will only get 60mins and hope Kane can get abit of time coz Pav really is S**** atm.Would really love to see Coulibaly for 20mins,but i think we would have to be ahead comfortably for that to happen.

Hi PBH, fair comments. I think we have to persevere with Pav ATM, though like you (and many others) I'm disappointed with him. Kane doesn't seem ready yet, and as for Coulibaly, it'll be interesting to see if he is on the bench. I think if our more experienced players put a good shift in tonight we should win. I'm more worried about their performance than the likes of Livermore, Carroll and Townsend who I think will do us proud again if they play. I think the smaller crowd (presumably) and the lack of key players on both sides will take some of the pace and intensity off the game tonight, it could still be niggly and nasty though. However, I suspect Stoke even more than us won't want to risk red cards, as their squad is likely to be more stretched than ours during this fixture-heavy period. We have the squad to perform in the EL and CC as well as the Prem, I'm not so sure that Stoke do. I guess we'll find out a lot tongiht.
