Is Tottenham the new power in North London?

Discussion in 'Arsenal' started by 2xwdcslayer, Sep 18, 2011.

  1. Actually one could look at the result at WHL as a small consolation for us since it would have been a PITA had Pool won instead and gone 6 points clear of us. With them knocking on the door for that 4th place, a win by them would have been mighty hard to swallow...

I agree that plural has a better sound generally but the singular is fine too. As a side note football clubs in Spanish (a language that uses the same Latin grammar as us) are ALWAYS singular. So by that reasoning technically we should refer to clubs in singular...

I was on the old 606 forum for a good 7-8 years.

At least 3-4 times year there would be a thread on the arsenal baord with this exact title.

Q: Is Tottenham the new power in North London?

A: No. even if this is the one year spurs finally finish above us.(which i sincerely doubt) It will be temporary.
Arsenal are a MUCH bigger club.

I've learned to never write Arsenal off for a top 4 finish.

So at this moment in time: No, Spurs are not currently better than Arsenal.

Check back after the last game of the season to see if I've changed my mind or not.

How about 2) Tottenham is IT the new power in North London. That works. Oh and I am thinking about using your comment as my new signature. I like the fact that grammar is the only doubt <laugh>

On current form Spurs will finish above Arsenal, but who knows what will happen by the end of the season.I agree this will not mean that the power has shifted.Though it will be nice to see Spurs ahead of Arsenal. Also a power shift has to start somewhere.COYS.

My opinion is it should be "Is" Tottenham the new power not "Are", "Are" suggest there are lots of Tottenhams when it is a single group/club we are talking about.

Doesn't matter if Tottenham is a group of people, it is a single group of people therefore should be referred to as a single entity which has been argued already.

I personally do not consider a football club a singular entity as it involves millions of people

Take for example a real group of people, not a country but an actualy defined group of people, that are not set to one particular location

or would you say IS catholics still going to church?

Is tottenham the new power to me suggest they already are, when the user specifically put a question mark at the end of the text, signifying to me it was a question, so I would use ARE

For me it depends if you are referring to the team, which would be plural, or the club in which case it would be singular
