I can remember attending a game at Maine Road when we (SAFC) played Liverpool - we lost and iirc Roger Hunt scored one of their goals in a 1-2 defeat. However, I can't find any reference to the game on http://www.stevesfootballstats.uk/maine_road_manchester.html. Can anyone please provide further details - my best guess is that it was an FA Cup game which was played there for some reason during the early 70's (maybe something to do with the 3 day week) - it was a midweek afternoon game).
Hunt only played for Liverpool between 1959 to 1970 so checking 11v11, the only 2-1 defeat in that period is this game on 13th April 1968 which was a Saturday and Hunt got 2 goals. https://www.11v11.com/matches/liverpool-v-sunderland-13-april-1968-79705/ These are the other 4 away games we played against them in that period and Hunt scored another 7 goals. https://www.11v11.com/matches/liverpool-v-sunderland-30-april-1960-110125/ https://www.11v11.com/matches/liverpool-v-sunderland-23-august-1961-110611/ https://www.11v11.com/matches/liverpool-v-sunderland-12-february-1966-78698/ https://www.11v11.com/matches/liverpool-v-sunderland-24-september-1966-78950/ He also scored 4 at Roker Park so that tallys up with his 13 goals in 16 games against us according to StatCat. http://www.thestatcat.co.uk/Player.aspx?PlayerID=10313 So unless it's an unrecorded friendly I'd say that the 2-1 you recall with Hunt scoring is that game above in 1968.
During the miners strike in 1972 SAFC played Cardiff in a FA Cup second replay at Maine Road . We lost 3-1 and that game was played on a midweek afternoon as was the first replay at Roker Park . Possible your memories are playing tricks but that is a possible fixture that may fit the bill .
That first replay at roker was my first game (not counting reserve games with my dad when I was exceedingly young), I can remember playing football in the fulwell, using one of the barriers for a goal.
Marbles now, seemingly out of my possession. Thanks for the proof that it must have been Cardiff @Bigmackem I can remember exactly where I was in the ground and there's no way I would have gone there, from where I was living at the time (West Midlands) for a meaningless fixture. It just seems that my memory of who we played was no more memorable than the game itself - I even managed to get the score wrong! Coincidentally, I see that the same game was being discussed on RTG, although the thread now seems to have disappeared. EDIT. I've now found it again. https://www.readytogo.net/smb/threads/sunderland-v-cardiff-maine-road-1972.755478/ Weird!!
The only way I can see this happening would be a cup replay on a neutral ground, but we have only had one cup replay against Liverpool and that was in 1922 !!
