Yeah PE weren’t the first. Artists like KRS-1 and Schooly D were bringing hip hop to the attention of people outside of NYC. But PE smashed the doors down when it came to hip hop being heard on the radio worldwide and they also had a big political message, so it changed the whole scene and took it up a level. Paid in Full is a brilliant album. But my favourite artists from those early days has to be EPMD
Amazing album and Wu Tang were raw as ****. Big call to name it the greatest piece of hip hop ever, but there's a good argument for it. There's several that you could call the greatest / most influential NWA - straight outta compton Wu Tang Clan - Enter the Wu Tang PE - It takes a nation of millions / Yo Bum rush the show Erik B & Rakim - Paid in Full BDP - Criminally minded Bestie Boys - Licenced to Ill A tribe called quest - Low end theory Run DMC - Raising Hell. De la Soul - Three feet high and rising There's probably a ton I've missed off too.
Definitely not NWA. They were worse collectively than their individual parts. Practically everybody was better as a solo artist. Possibly most influential in terms of how hip hop evolved early 90’s. I don’t see anything in that list that comes close but I guess that’s my own view, although there’s plenty of folk out there who think 1. Illmatic and 2. 36 Chambers and everything else after that.
In terms of influential albums though, Straight Outta Compton is up there as one of the biggest. But yeah I agree as a band there were loads better. Nas Illmatic is a seminal album and so is 36 Chambers, but my list had barely even got out of the 80's lol.
Snitch9ine won't be on anyone's list Stitches on the other hand will be regarded in the same light as the greats
