Ten? This is tricky because three, for me, really stand out. 1. Deep Purple (Mk II) 2. Rush 3. The late lamented Rory Gallagher.
Re Rory: it was one certain Mr James M Hendrix who described him as the world's greatest guitarist. Having seen him so many times from the City Hall in the 70s and from thence on through the Continent until just before his death playing in a small Belgian village hall I can only agree with the man. The only consolation is that he never took up the offer to replace Blackmore in Purple as that would never have worked. Mind you, Tommy Bolin was hardly a success neither.
I believe he was also headhunted to join the Rolling stones when he was with Taste, i don't think that would have worked either
Crap. Can't believe I totally forgot them in my original post on page 5 but Arcade Fire are a definite top 10 band for me. Saw them at Edinburgh Castle a couple of weeks back and they were absolutely sublime!
1) Incubus 2) Linkin Park 3) Biffy Clyro 4) Panic! At The Disco 5) Slipknot 6) Enter Shikari 7) Fighstar 8) Funeral For A Friend 9) 30 Seconds To Mars 10) You Me At Six
I agree with earlier comments though that the true test of how good a band is is how they perform on the live stage. For me three bands prove this to be the case. Coldplay, Arcade Fire and U2. U2 for me are the kings live! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0QtzU5hYXk Oh and here's a fine new Coldplay song called Charlie Brown better than that Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall (it's title sounds like a discarded song from Disney's Pinocchio) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0QtzU5hYXk
For live performances, you just can't ignore Radiohead. Pure brilliance.
