I think you will find that is not true, when using a football team in the same way as described in the sentance at the start, the term tottenham was used and not tottenham hotspur football club

American English often uses singular verbs when using the noun (e.g. singular name of the team city) but immediately changes to plurals when using pronouns, even in the same sentence. San Francisco is doing quite well now they've started hitting better. The AE usage seems to be grammatical rather than conceptual. Note: the San Francisco Giants are doing quite well... is because "The Giants" is obviously plural. In each case, the city is not being referred to , so it must be the team. You won't hear "San Francisco is doing quite well now it has started hitting better."

    Being bilingual can be confusing

  3. That doesn't matter. Whether one is referring to THFC or its geographical location, either is singular.

That's right, as stated earlier both are correct it just depends on class, which it seems you failed to learn in your language at "public school"

  6. The Microsoft spell-checker is for Americans who cannot even write their own bastardized version of our great language. I'd much rather rely upon the providence of my superb education <ok>

Well i would regard Malcolm Macdonald as a Arsenal great and he is ranked as the 44th best Arsenal player according to a poll taken by Arsenal fans, on that list Alan smith is 27th.

  10. Perhaps not an absolute gr8 like Henry or Bergkamp but he is as he always was, a good guy and someone who does not BS ;)

  11. D'ya have a link to that list my friend? I'd love to see it. Should be an interesting read <ok>

Personally I would place Alan Smith above Malcolm Macdonald too and possibly with a wider gap between the both of them

Kanu at no. 13, now as much as I loved him he's not an all time Arsenal great.

Smugger on the other hand, twice golden boot winner, scored the first goal at Anfield in 89 and provided the assist for that goal. Scored the winner in the cup winners cup final. I could go on but I'm sure you get the picture <ok>
