I think he, like the rest of us can feel the inherant contradictions between what we need to be doing and what we are doing. If you care about the state of the world at all then you must feel it. The changes we make personally don't add up to the systemic change that is needed and the fact is than even those of use who are not multi-millionaire racing drivers don't want to or feel we can't afford to give up the things we would need to to make a difference. The real change needs to come from governments but it won't because voters would crucify them because people are basically too selfish to accept the change. They want someone else to take responsibility but don't want to make personal sacrifices. So while Hamilton is being a bit pious (when is he not?) I don't think it's hypocritical to mourn the environmental collapse that is going on and still feel that changes we make as individuals don't amount to much. Or it probably is hypocritical but it's also human nature.
To add to the above the problem is also large corporations and unchecked capitalism. And the governments who are too weak to stand up to them, or who are in bed with them.
He's full of **** and has no clue what he is talking about, he's simply regurgitating hard-core vegan propaganda from 'what the health', none of which holds weight scientifically. that film is a joke, my friend got very upset when I watched 5 minutes of it and burst out laughing and started tearing it apart. every doctor they interviewed makes all their money from veganism, selling vegan books and videos and their claims are hilariously outlandish like 'eating eggs is as bad as smoking' and then use a study from the 1950's that was sponsored by the meat industry to prove it. I suspect the food industry is massively into it, they can make 10x the profit, fake meat from soya is far cheaper to make (according to vegans) but always costs more.
Some valid points there . Just for instance though I have to have a car to get to work . The public transport is useless . There is not even a park and ride where I work , Southampton , so I have to go at least part way into the city centre . Why do we have plastic bags at all ? Why not paper ? Trees can be planted. The government are not prepared to do anything because it will cost to much,. Yes we are all selfish up to a point . But imho Big Ern and others are spot on about Hamilton . Hes just jumped on the bandwagon .
Global warming is a complex subject and I am not entering into a geography lecture but I was shocked by some facts. There are arguments on both sides but no one can argue global warming is happening, the debate hinges on how much is man contributing and would it continue without our contribution. Twice, earth was a snowball, last time less than a billion years ago. Keeping this short, Over the last million years sea levels have changed significantly. Living in Guernsey I was interested in its geology. You can openly see facts in support of the following. 800,000 years ago sea levels were likely to have been 35m higher than now. This fell gradually, with the formation of ice elsewhere and the land rising, to 30m higher than now around 400,000 years ago to 21m 300,000 years ago, to 13m 200,000 years ago. Sea levels continued to fall, but more rapidly over the next 100,000 years. This is a blink in the history of the earth. My point is, we all need to do the research to establish how we can effect the change and can we hold back the rate of change or are we being King Canutes? I don't know the answer, just get fully informed and then make judgements and decisions. Geological evidence does not as yet tell us sea temperatures but I suspect we will get an understanding through science. Added footnote - Oxygen Isotope ratio of both sediment core and ice core give some indications of temperatures over the last 1 million years.
Wonder how long before some billionaire comes up with an idea of pumping all this excess water to something like the Danakil depression
the problem is too many people will have their heads in the sand until it's too late, and it's only Europe, N America Aus and NZ that take it seriously.
This. Change is often inconvenient and can be painful. In general, people and corporates will cling to the status quo until the pain of the status quo is worse than the pain of changing. The trouble is, with climate change, by the time enough people have reached their pain threshold, we'll have missed the boat. I don't think that the human race is facing extinction, but I think that 'life as we know it' will change enormously in the next 20 years. 'Once in a lifetime' weather events are now 'once or twice in a generation'. As well as the 'the way we live', I think the other big problem is the high global population. Way more people than the planet can support (within the social & economic frameworks that we have today). One thing that might help is a pandemic from an antibiotic resistant bug, but the smell would be terrible. Blimey, this thread has come a long way from Hamilton's clumsy attempt to stop people eating meat.
It has and I agree with a lot of what you say, there will be a cull of the human race and I do trust in nature in that regard.
Maybe. Another example of the difficulty of the ethical versus the practical. I don't have a downer on vegans in general, I don't really get the animosity. Some are militant, and they are the ones you hear about. I genuinely think the rest are trying to do the right thing whetyer you agree with it or not. The trouble with debate on a lot of political and ethical issues is that it's driven to polar extremes all the time. There is no nuance anymore.
The original late 70s version was excellent and still relevant today. Round about that time I went to a university party and got talking to a vegetarian. I told her I agreed with much of what she was saying but that I would find it difficult to give up meat, at which she threw her drink at me and said I hate people like you.
One of my three daughters is a vegan following a vegan month, January 2018. If you go down this route you have to do it right in terms of diet. It is complex chemistry to feed your body right. She has had a few more sick days since being vegan but too early to say if they are linked. She isn't preaching thankfully. I think her siblings would rapidly put her in her place if she did. I will say she dishes up some good vegan dinners when I go round there. You should have said something along the lines of 'are you attempting to marinate me before cooking and eating me?'
That is my biggest gripe . I dont care what people eat , or drink for that matter asong as they dont preach to me . I have met perhaps 4 or 5 vegans and everyone tells me what I eat is Wrong and Bad for me . They can do one as far as I'm concerned .
for me it's the false science that really gets my goat. "We're herbivores" becuase x,y,z (just ignore a-w), Eating meat isn't killing the planet, factory farming is, and the aesthetic consumerism that fuels it. It isn't the meat, poultry or dairy famers that are the only culprits, it's all ****ed. Never cared if the banana was a bit black (they taste better that way anyway), the apples had a bit of bruising; it was an apple, it was banana they tasted good, now they look nice and taste ****, or they end up in the supermarket waste bin. We've forgone proper land husbandry for profit, short-term gains for long-term loss, and the loss will far outweigh the huge profits.
This is not really F1 other than Lewis is depressed and wanting to give up on everything, has even sold his plane. If you are a chartist, the below showing temperatures over the last 1 million years suggests we are headed for temperatures 6 degrees higher than the norm following a deep spell of cold, including the ice age. The earth is in a cycle which we impact but not convinced we are the main event. Frightening!!
