Young Mr McLean is never going to be a top striker in the Championship or higher ... But I honestly believe he should be playing as an attacking midfielder He works hard, is totally committed and sets things up extremely well but I just cannot see him as a striker/goalscorer Not getting on the lads case but if we could find a starting line up with him behind a front two I think we would score many more goals than we do now ...
He has had a good record with previous teams and has played as a striker throughout his career, why as a 28-year-old would we try and make him adapt to play in a different position?
He had a great record in League 2, but averaged 1 in 5 at Championship level before he came here. I agree though that he is not anything other than a striker. I'm not going to slag him off, because yet again he worked tirelessly for the team. However, until he starts scoring a few in this league (the Peterborough game was a good start), my view will always remain that McLean unfortunately isn't up to Championship standard.
He scored 8 in a relegation season for Peterborough, so for a promotion fighting team you'd hope he could at least match that. Although I admit it looks unlikely.
Guys let's be positive, you can't fault the blokes effort and determination. He was manhandled all 90 mins yesterday, got no protection from the ref and still kept winning flick one and headers. When we get Stewart back and start feeding the strikers from the wings and he's facing goal all our strikers will be more productive. Its a team game and he was MOTM for a lot of supporters yesterday.
I know he gives 200% everytime but so does the Kit man. should he also be playing has a striker because of that? A big part of is job is to score goals and he simply doesn't.
McLean will come good and weigh in with a few goals I think. He is heavily involved in most of our build up play and has provided many great chances for the likes of Fryatt. Only a matter of time for McLean before he starts scoring on a regular basis.
It's taking Mclean a while but I think it's the way we play, we're not winning 4-3 and losing 3-2, we're winning 1-0. Don't think we'll have strikers breaking goal records this season. Since Campbell & Windass we haven't had prolific forwards at City.
Why are people still convinced that strikers just have to score goals and that's it. The OP has acknowledged that McLean's strengths are setting people up, winning headers, etc. but then gone on to suggest he shouldn't play up front just because he doesn't score loads. Some strikers do more than just score, get over it.
