Celtic Football Club Statement By: Newsroom Staff on 17 Sep, 2011 15:44 CELTIC Football Club has issued a statement on a Daily Record article printed today. The newspaper carried a back page headline asking: "WHO'S MORE HATED AT IBROX? (Is it Lennon or the taxman?)". A spokesperson for Celtic Football Club commented: "Clearly, given the year Neil Lennon and his family have experienced - with bombs, bullets, death threats and physical assaults - this kind of reporting is inflammatory, highly irresponsible and quite simply offensive. For this newspaper to treat the matter in this insensitive and ill-judged manner is astonishing. Celtic has today been inundated with complaints from supporters relating to this story and the Club fully understands their feelings on this issue. There is no question, on the eve of a Rangers v Celtic match to use "Lennon, "Hate" and "Ibrox" in a newspaper headline is extremely irresponsible. Neil Lennon, his coaching staff and the Celtic players are very disappointed at this reporting and have jointly decided that they will not be co-operating with journalists from The Daily Record. It is only right that the newspaper delivers a suitable retraction and apology. Neil Lennon as always will continue to receive the full support of everyone at the Club."
Its about time the media took some flak for stoking the flames of what is already a volatile game. Their behaviour around the game has been worse than that of some of the players recently.
Exactly, they hype it up, wind the yahoos up and then go into shock horror mode when there are incidents due to the game!
Disgraceful headline. As brum says, stoking the flames and if something kicks off they will be wringing their hands and saying its shocking.
Salmond reckons that if he can stop Celtic fans singing Irish Songs he will be doing great work in his so called actions against sectarianism and bigotry. However if he controlled the media and made an impartial attempt to stump out bigotry at the root cause he would have better reward.
I would hope that the last few thousand Celtic fans still stupid enough to buy this rag will now stop doing so and signal the death knell for this disgraceful paper. The Daily Record is on it's last legs with circulation at a record low. Their 'journalists' are among the lowest paid in Britain and the Scottish Government has cut their advertising stream to the DR by something like 80% over the past few years. It is a paper in serious decline and is now pandering to the lowest element with desperate headlines and sensationalist stories which, when read, bare little relation to the excitable nonsense screamed along the top of the page, eg CELTIC IN CRISIS when we had lost a few pre-season friendlies.
Thugs and thieves.... And people still bought the thing They sent a double decker bus to Seville loaded with scantily clad ladies. Folk were more than happy to sand about smiling and getting photos taken. I didn't understand that at all. The same folk would moan the next time the Record printed some **** or other.
The Records articles of late have been nothing less than scandelous the past couple of years but they have sunk to new depths with this one. Theyve ran short with actual football stories so they're trying in vain to fill they're bog roll of a rag! ****em!!!
Glad to see most Gers fans are also a bit peeved at the headline, I'm sure 99.4% of folk just what to look forward to a big game and once and for all put the nonsense of last season to bed.
Thomas you're spot on but I would find it hard to believe many Rangers fans would feel different to me. For ages Snyde 1 have mocked callers who phone to demand the media (sunday mail & record journos surprise surprise on the panel) take a lot of the blame for hyping up the hatred. Thankfully those dying breeds have been shown up for what they really are and have no hiding place now!!!
Reading on another site earlier, it seems one of their chief editors has been in trouble with the police for racially aggravated sectarian ****e. Hearts fan apparently.
I blame the press for the Lennon situation last season , they built Lennon into this hate figure , remember Uncle Wattie got charged in law court in his first season for. Attacking the then st johnstone manager , in recent years accussed a linesman of wrong doing because of his surname , and had run ins with hibs and Kilmarnock managers .Far worse incidents than Lennon was ever involved yet the Scottish media loved him !!!!!
The thing is though Rebel; when some ****** is banging a drum in your ear repeatedly, you don't notice when he plays anything good.
Yeah, all that needed to be said is that the press are complicit in creating this situation with Lennon.
