My mother gave me the odd slap as a kid, all thoroughly deserved ... the old man never... his disappointment (he never said much but it was obvious from his look) was always enough to make me reign my neck in..

Got 3 girls myself so always refrained from physical punishment, predominantly down to fear of hurting them physically as much as detesting the thought of it ... which I do. Their mum's administered the odd slap around the back of the legs but always at a point where every other attempt to curb the behaviour had failed ... one I particularly recall was when one was continually trying to run off in a crowded shopping mall ... the fear factor of losing her (and the Bulger tragedy) kicked in ... I have no problem with that. The short sharp shock led to some tears (on both parts) and some "sorry mummy's" and then a child holding our hands and full of smiles in next to no time.

So for me, always an absolute last resort, but wouldn't necessarily castigate a parent for it.

    Never hit my lads

My stare was/is always enough to get the message across.

As a kid I was forever getting a belt, either from my old man or my grandad. Setting fire to the Parkies hut while he was still in it went down particularly well!, I seem to recall!.

My own two I can only remember smacking once for something. Usually a stare or a sharply raised voice was enough to bring a halt to whatever nefarious plans the little horrors had dreamt up.

I'll admit I was a handful at times, I clashed with my mum because I was hardly ever at home from about 14 onwards, only really came home to get clothes. And the traditional grief and hairdryer treatment from entry til I left. Moved out for good when I was 16 changed my number and done my own thing for 4 years until I turned up again one day to say hello and let her know I was still alive
Toughened me up big time, learned to look after my own **** early, the beats also made me quick as lightning, back then anyways <laugh>

kids are out of control more and more and it's because parents and society has turned it's back on good old fashioned discipline !!! even the teachers should be allowed to take a stick to them imo.

I wouldn’t smack my own kids.

I’d happily slap the **** out of a boy who was bullying my daughter though, and his old man for good measure.

My daughter won’t grow up thinking a man can hit her if she doesn’t behave, simple as that.

The UK is falling into the trap of allowing kids to get away with wrong doings when ever they like. Discipline is a must and part of growing up learning what is right and wrong...Nobody is talking about using kids as a punch bag here.....There is nothing wrong with giving your child a smack if they have done something wrong that could hurt them if they continue to do the same thing. We must not let our kids think they can get away with wrong doings just because the nammby Pammby do gooders think it is wrong or our kids will grow up thinking they can do whatever and nobody can touch them.....I urge families to continue punishing their children if it warrants it and ignore the Government.

I've had to punish my children over the years but have never thought that I needed to physically hurt them to get my point across.

As I said earlier, I was terrified of my dad when he was angry with me, which was often as he had a very short temper (still does). He'd go ballistic but he never smacked me, he didn't need to, I understood that he was the boss.
