It should be compulsory along with lights on a bike .
How can you be forced to wear an helmet in a motorbike that does 35mph but not a cyclist that can be cycling at 45 mph !

Yep, pretty much. It could be worth you digging deeper into the issue,. I mentioned the suitability of neurosurgeons etc on the specifics, previously, but if you're happy with your version, fill your boots.

 

As the experts in the field point out, the solution is raising awareness so that the chances of that accident are reduced.

 

Would you wear one when walking? The arguments for cyclists wearing one, actually fit better to pedestrians, and the helmet would be nearer to its design limits. Your observation about motorcycle helmets should give you a clue on the effectiveness of the plastic hats sold to some cyclists.

So, why don't you wear one when walking? Shouldn't it be compulsory for pedestrians?

 

I’ve had a look online and the few articles I read support entirely wearing a cycle helmet, it wasn’t exhaustive by any measure. But totally supports what to most would be common sense anyway.

 

A split helmet is actually a sign that it failed, and wasn't fit for purpose.

 

I can't say I've see anybody walking at more than 4mph so your analogy is a bit silly .

You can’t control careless motorists. They will always exist, I see enough of them on an almost daily basis.

 

If you're happy to wear one, and feel safer with a plastic cap that's designed for about a 1m fall, that's your choice. Anyone suggesting it should be compulsory is actually removing the choice of others, and conflicting with the evidence from field studies.

 

4mph is about the design limit of the helmets.

 

Would you rather a split helmet or a split skull?

 

If that's your argument, why don't you wear a motorcycle helmet when riding a bike?

Why don't you wear a cycle helmet when walking?

 

Suggest you have a look at the testing methods used on proper helmets. Not a Lidl special.

 

I have, and the British Standard, as well as the safety sheets for the helmets.

 

A motorcycle helmet doesn’t allow sufficient venting or is light enough for the physical effort involved in road cycling. MTB helmets are close to motorcycle helmets as that style of riding is now mostly down hill amongst trees.

A cycle helmet is not designed for 40mph. Even my mother rides faster than the design spec. There have been court cases involving insurance companies that tried to prove contributory negligence from people not wearing a helmet, and the claims failed, as it was demonstrated that the helmets served no function unless you were going so slowly that they wouldn't be needed.
