Also out of say the 4/5 chances they had 2/3 were clear offsides but no flags. And I agree it was deffo a penalty, studs up and caught Mane in the top of the foot. I though it was odd that Mane never called for it tbh.
Of all the times he's looked for a penalty when it wasn't, today it was and he gets up no complaint. Players must know the ref looks for reactions to help him make his decision. Very happy with the win.
They don't flag now because of VAR or somesuch? Would then be called back. That game showed how hard games would be if the opposition managed to shut down Firmino. He hardly featured. We struggled going forward.
Hard game, but we tried to make it as difficult as possible for ourselves. Mane should have had at least 1, salah should have scored, good shout for a penalty as well. If mane scores one of those early chances the game opens up and we could have pushed on, instead it was tight and nervy till the last.
We looked much better when originally came on and he dropped into midfield, was able to gain a bit more space
Today was also a good example of how having a lively crowd really helps. We could have and should have capitalised after the goal when they were in disarray and the crowd uncertain. I think we had 2 shots on target within minutes of scoring having not had a shot on target for the whole first half
Correct. And pundits keep pushing the "it's easier for defenders with VAR" line which is obviously bullshit when they now have to defend despite them being offside.
I actually missed that as went to toilet Came back and didn’t see replay cause had to take dogs out What happened Was it nailed on ?
The whole offside rule is massively in forwards favour .They had a chance from a corner following VVD cutting out a cross ,by banging it for a throw which then led to the corner, to a player who was blatantly offside however won't be flagged until he touches ball despite his presence causing the VVD to play the ball.
not at full speed no. what happened was that Mane played ball and millisecond later was caught by the defender who was trying to get to ball first. VAR supposedly looked but seemed to decide really quickly but in 2 angles clear Mane caught after he played the ball . The decision wouldn't have been overturned even if checked more thoroughly as it is virtually impossible to reach the "high bar" set for clear & obvious errors.
Take it and move on, poor all round to be honest but as Klopp said after - you want to play your best, but if you can’t make sure you’re ready to fight for the win
That is one aspect of it that I don't think many foresaw and it's one of its biggest drawbacks. The system really is a complete an shambles and needs sorting out or ditching. What the hell is a "clear and obvious error"? In the first half Virge puts the ball out for a corner but the ref doesn't see it and gives a goal kick. The camera sees it, so if that doesn't qualify for that description what does? I'm not 100% sold on the penalty shout tbh, because I think Mané followed through a bit and they kicked each other. There's an element of subjectivity to that one.
What I hate is when it is offside, no flag, striker gets a shot off and goes out for a corner or gets a free kick etc. Then they could score from said free kick or corner, whereas had he scored it would have been disallowed. A defender is none the wiser though.
In the past we would lose that game and I would have liked us to just pass it around the back for 90 mins if the other team doesn't care, but we can't afford any draws these days so have to go for it more. They did sit back a lot, but broke through us with relative ease I thought.
He won't be called offside unless (a) it's blatantly offside or (b) they score from it. If it's close but they don't score, play continues so the defence is ****ed over.
wouldn't have been before VAR as unless he played the ball or interfered with oppo player he wasn't judged to be offside
