As much as I hate crediting Huns with making good points, I saw this on the thread for folk who like books and pretending to be well read; I imagine it is like a stopped clock, a Hun is bound to be right every so often. Anyway, are libraries dead? They lent records when ****s stopped reading, they lent videos when ****s got sick of tv and dvd's when folk chucked their videos. Now ****s just steal TV and DVD's and people just read books on their kinder eggs or whatever you kids call it. If you wanted to buy a book, play.com send it to your house at no cost and you can keep the book for cheaper than paying the fine to the library. You can have the internet on your phones, so no need to go to the library at all. Should Libraries be flattened and turned into better public amenities, like skateboard parks or indoor football?
I can edit it just like that *snaps fingers*. It is a fair point though. Are libraries worth saving? Has their purpose been outlived?
i wont ever buy a kindle, you cant beat actually having the book in your hand. but i never use my local library even though it is popular, i always buy books if i want them. they're so cheap these days.
Popular for what though? For the soft play area and kiddie books, but not for adult sized books shirley?
Surely libraries will adapt to meet the demands of new technology. In fact, are they not already doing that? Anyway, as far as I can see libraries are little more than community centres these days. That's certainly the case in Edinburgh, apart from the central ones.
They do adapt but they tend to be reactive to societal changes. Things are moving so fast that it is impossible for private businesses, let alone a public amenity.
The amount of OAPs I see using libraries, who can't afford to buy books (I would guess: knowing the value of the state pension), I would think they serve a greater purpose in the community rather than some developer building new flats and charging £100k plus for one! Also, they give people access to computers who otherwise wouldn't have the chance to...
You're Irish and therefore a skint, trampy, waster. Now go sell some lucky heather and pay us Brits back.
Very soon that'll be irrelevant. Strike while the iron is hot. Turn them into a laser quest and put the oldies into smaller, more cost effective purpose built facilities.
Of course the flip side is that ignorant people shall remain ignorant. That said, it is unlikely that these people would see the inside of a library anyway.
