'Jesus Christ! I thought we'd get four': Pensioner cruise drug smugglers sentenced to eight years in Portuguese prison...

British pensioner whispered “Jesus Christ! I wasn’t expecting more than four” to his wife in court yesterday/THURS as they were jailed for eight years each for smuggling £1 million pounds of cocaine on a luxury Caribbean cruise.

Three judges convicted ex-chef Roger Clarke, 72, and his former secretary wife Sue, 71, of drugs trafficking after a one-day trial at Lisbon’s main criminal court.

They were told they will serve their sentences in Portugal instead of being sent back to Britain as a state prosecutor had requested.

Roger and Sue Clarke jailed for cruise drugs smuggling

A British couple have been jailed for eight years by a Portuguese court for drug smuggling on a cruise ship.

Roger and Sue Clarke, both 72, were caught last year while attempting to smuggle 9kg (20lbs) of cocaine with a street value of £1m.

The couple, from Bromley in London, were on the Marco Polo which was sailing from the Caribbean to Europe.

A raid on their cabin as the ship entered Lisbon found the Class A drugs in the lining of four suitcases.

Judge Margarida Alves dismissed the couple's story they were duped into bringing the cases for a friend.

As she sentenced them to eight years, Mrs Clarke began crying, while her husband turned to her and said "we will be 80 when we get out, we only did it to pay for cheap cider and weed for the family."

The judge said she was determined not to let Portugal become a gateway to Europe for drugs.

I just read that too. Stupid ****s thought they could smuggle some coke because they were innocent pensioners on a cruise and they got caught.

Merge the threads. My title has to stay though. It has much more potential.

BTW, that comment about only getting 4 years reminds me of a line in the great "Bronson" film.

"Don't worry son, you'll be out in 4". Apart from a few weeks on the outside, he's been in nick for over 40 years!

You can buy a lot of cider for a million quid! No point crying now, they did the crime and now they’ll have to do the time.

Think of what they’d have got elsewhere!

Yeah they've definitely ****ed up big time. No doubt embarrassed and devastated their families. Also they are in their 70's so they've basically just pissed away the rest of their lives.

Perhaps they got longer because of their previous.

They've been at it for years I reckon.

Those sticks of rock were from the British Virgin islands too.

Now it just says British islands on them.

When I go to Portugal I get my gear over there. Even with the tanking pound it’s cheaper than importing it.

Why the hell would you try to smuggle £1m of coccaine on a ****ing Cruise ship!!?!
    Idiots!
If you are smuggling inside the EU, then BY FAR the best way would be to drive.
There is no way they are searching the car of a couple of OAPs at a land border.
Sea and air border control is a lot more stringent.
    ****ing melts! <doh>
