This is good as other manufacturers will have to step up to the mark. You may recall the crisis of the 70s and 80s, and the US companies still continued to produce big fuel guzzling motors for their domestic market, however their former clients decided to buy small, more modern economical Toyota cars. It seems as if the US car companies are still playing catch-up. Mercedes for the moment appeal to the upper end of the car market but others will come under pressure to adapt or or go bust.

PS: Talking of TESLA don´t they own Jaguar? But the new Jaguar looks nothing like the tradtional one,

The traditional Americans are making profits out of ICE pickup trucks. That's it. Ford have stopped making cars in the USA. GM have the Chevy Bolt, and that's about it. They all have plans but they're really slow out of the blocks. I think they could actually go under. And unlike last time in 2008, not to be rescued this time. Tesla have the US electric market pretty much on their own

Funny you should mention Mercedes [Daimler], because just a few days ago they announced they would no longer be developing any new ICEs. That's pretty significant. The accepted inventor of the internal combustion engine is ditching it. Their first EV product without any help from Tesla, the EQC is a pretty bland affair, with bland specification, but it is a Mercedes, there's no doubt.

And India's Tata Motors own Jaguar/Land Rover. You're right about the Jaguar iPace not looking like a traditional Jaguar. But it is similar to the company's ICE F-Pace and the E-Pace, whilst out-muscling both at nearly twice the price. However, it does have phenomenal off-road capability, like a Land Rover, whereas the ICE pair are limited. And it actually looks pretty good too:

We actually need the really cheap electric car to come along. Europeans and Americans can't do it because they are too far behind. Tesla can't yet because they are too small and are too busy growing for new models, like the Model Y, The Tesla Pickup, The Tesla Semi [a huge electric truck] the revamped Model S and X, the 2nd Gen Roadster, and making existing Model 3 cars. So it's down to the Chinese, methinks. Maybe VW, with the new ID3 will be cheap enough? But they won't be making that many when they get going. And these cheap ones need to be turned out like shelled peas.

There's been a major crash on the junction between Portsmouth road and Botany Bay. One car smashed and on its side, ambulances and fire engines and equipment across the road and pavement.

Didn't want to walk through it so had to cut through the forest at the side to catch my train.

Nasty one and hope everyone is okay.

Edit: Just heard they had to free a woman from the car but she only had minor injuries so will be fine.

Cleaning in my kitchen while listening to Eminem on full blast, there's a knock at the door. Two jehovah witness standing there with their eyes burning with promises. I look at them while a particularly vile part of the CD plays.
'Yeah I've got a minute to talk, can I get you a mug of tea?' I say.

    They literally ran away! <laugh>

I miss the odd conversation with Jehovah Witnesses. They seem to have gone to ground. Being born a Catholic and rationalised God away, I've got their chat covered. Maybe they just know my door number.

What do you know of Rivian, apart from my mentioning their name? They are a genuine all-electric vehicle manufacturer, one of those that are apart from Tesla, in the USA. They've been around since 2009, but kept very quiet until 2018. I suppose the best way to introduce them is to cheat and post a recent Fully Charged video, featuring Jonny Smith, who is the co-host of Robert Llewellyn's channel, an electric car geek and Fifth Gear presenter:

You might have noticed from the video the slightly odd faced look of the vehicle. I took an instant dislike to it, and wondered whether it would ever grow on me. A year after first seeing it, it has. It no longer irks me. And there are a couple of cute reasons why they made it such, which they may explain in the video.
So, just to put a few things into print. Here's a bit more cheating - copy and paste: 2 models. The R1T [Pickup Truck] and the Range Rover style R1S [SUV]. 3 battery sizes and powers for each model. The various battery and power combos mean that you can go either fast, with a decent range. Really superfast with a better range. Or have a huge range with almost the same speed as the second option. And yes, they will out accelerate all but the fastest hypercars. The R1S easily outclasses the Range Rover, for cheaper [£58500], and the R1T is a really innovative Pickup Truck [£55800]. Almost makes me wish I needed one.

Recently, when Ford were boasting that their new all-electric F-150 truck was pulling a huge train, it was really one of these with Ford clothes on. Here's that advert. Warning - it's cringingly American, and once you work it out, it's not as impressive as it first appears. But a similar sized diesel wouldn't be upto it, so...

Porsche Taycan Turbo [and Turbo S featured] road trip with Jonny Smith of Fully Charged. Haven't seen it myself yet, but I'm really interested to see what Porsche have come up with as a driveable, liveable-with sports EV.

EDIT: Very nice electric car. I'm so pleased that a well known and respected traditional manufacturer has made a good effort at a sports ev. It's a Grand Tourer Sports with the performance of a Tesla Saloon or a million pound ICE Hypercar. Jaguar's iPace is a thoroughly good SUV, if a little bit less efficient. This is the same in a GTS, and it has Tesla efficiency levels. Porsche owners won't mind whether it is better or worse. It's a good 'un. What they may object to is that this undoubtedly signals the end of the ICE Porsche car. But what a nice first ev to take over.

Last time they knocked on my door, one had a Jamaican accent. I ended up selling him some Jerk seasoning as it was back when we were importing that.

Fair enough. When I read the article the other day, the blank space below "paid for by" read "Henkel"

    But good stuff anyway.

And I still have a tiny bit left of the hot one. It certainly doesn't go off in the fridge. :1980_boogie_down:

It doesn’t go off in the cupboard. Jerk was originally created as a preservative of meat... they then realised it was flavouring the meat.

My son in Midsomer Norton wishes he had a moat to keep the uninvited away. Unfortunately he lives in a mid-terrace so I'm not sure à 15' long pond in front of his house would quite cut it. He could still have a drawbridge I suppose
