    So the best way is to pay by credit card, then you're protected?

    Been many a year since i've done short haul or package deal.

    So how do you book?

    Do you look for the cheapest deals only?

    Thinking about some short haul weekends, few days, are any reliable?

    Extra costs etc.

    I always pay on a credit card purely for the protection.

    I normally book independently, meaning, I will look for the cheapest flights via someone like easyjet etc. Then I will go and look for a hotel via booking.com or book private accommodation via airbnb. Once I've found the flight, destination, dates and accomodation I want, then I start booking. Normally the flight first, followed by the property I require.

    Add ons, with easyjet you can book your seat(s) but you pay extra for it, so if your not bothered just skip that section, price based on where you sit. You then pay for your luggage, if you're only taking a backpack then it's free ie size restricted for onboard the craft. Luggage costs, starts at about 23kg to 25kg and I think there is one higher weight. So if you only take your onboard bag and let them choose your seats, then there is no additional cost. If you are short haul, you don't need to be booking food arrangements either.

    It really is as easy as all that, from a long weekend to a month, whatever you prefer. This time of year you can get return short haul return flight tickets for around £60+ - However, with the current Thomas Cook collapse, this might affect immediate flight prices during repatriation, not sure.

    For example, just done a quick check on easyjet, to fly into Pisa (City break within easy reach of Florence) for 5 nights, return flights Sunday - Friday = £79.56 - you could do cheaper but it would be coming back at stupid o'clock which would have reduced the price by another £12. You could even stay for longer for cheaper but remember that means more cost into a hotel.

    You just need to give us ideas of what you would fancy, beach, city, and what destination ie Spain etc.

    Other extras could be, taxi to hotel, public transport fares to other detinations during your stay. Airport parking but you know all that stuff.

    Bloomberg are saying that the hedge funds stand to make $250 mill+ from the collapse of Thomas Cook. And bingo, they go bust.

    Sky News mentioned a woman who was travelling with two kids with special needs. She’d paid Thomas Cook extra for additional support while travelling. Now she’s sat in an airport just trying to get on a plane which won’t necessarily be going to her home airport and, of course, no guarantees that the kids’ special needs will be cared for. ****ing shambles.

    From what I gather the £200-£250M they needed to save the company, was only delaying the inevitable regarding what was happening. It was reported today that the company was literally hemorrhaging money. So i'm guessing the foresite was to waste £600M on the taxpayer to bring everyone home now, because no matter how much money was put into Thomas Cook it was not going to save it. One hotel claimed it had not been paid since March.

    I'm not going to get into the hedgefunds stuff. However, it appears their top man was paid millions, but when journalists spoke to now redundent employee's they wouldn't have a bad word said against him, as they said it was YEARS of mis-management.

    It was blamed on people changing their holiday habits ie regarding package holidays, more doing their own thing online, and it was claimed Thomas Cook never kept pace with those changes. Basically meaning the demand of package holidays was not what they once were. Whereas in todays market people want flexiability I assume.

    <laugh>

    I'm not sure where he stands with flight only, all compensation chat has been in regards to 'package holidays' - they said anything under a £100 may not be covered even on a cc, and customers cannot claim for their airport car park charges if I heard it right, i assume that was in regards to overstay.
