Could this be the right free transfer for City? Gary Hooper The 31-year-old was released by Sheffield Wednesday at the end of last summer, having managed just six Championship appearances last season. He has a wealth of experience in the division and would certainly add depth to the Robins’ strike force, but there is a debate as to whether he would actually improve it. Probably the most affordable player on this list, he was linked with Hull City earlier this month. At 5ft 9ins, he is not the tallest and a couple of inches shorter than Afobe. However, he is effective in the air and adept at holding the ball up and bringing in players around him. 31 years old, 5.9 inch, experienced, could be just right for a short term contract and better if he is still top notch and he is available on a free.
remember Wilbs! … available on a free? grey area for me.. but thought only ones we could sign outside the transfer window is out of contract or contract already terminated?
I must admit I'm not convinced - it strikes that the only thing going for it is that he is available Maybe Semenyo should be given a run?
Think someone looked at free agents and his name popped up. Bit like Bony but people think he’s the player he was before malaria.
Difficult isn’t it, they’re free agents for a reason, None of them excite me . Better to use what we have and look to bring someone in January.
Except we all know deep down that Fammy won’t score enough goals to keep us in contention by Jan that a decent player will want to come, we saw this with Nekith from Arsenal. Fammy needs 4-6 chances per game to get a goal and that is asking a lot of the team if he’s the main striker. I would rather go with Semenyo, who might also take 4-6 chances per game to start with, but hopefully he will learn and improve as a result. Same with Weimann, a hard working, willing runner, but again won’t score the goals required. Without taking a gamble, come May we will all be sat here lamenting that yet again we didn’t take a gamble on getting a striker in when we desperately needed one, mark my words!!
Spot on we will fall away strike force is no where near good enough.Nothing has changed we are where we were 2 years ago without Afobe. Such a shame as it all looked rosey.
If we rely on one player we won’t be in contention, his scoring record per game is actually very good, unlike our midfield, we need goals throughout the team. We are where we are the only list we can chose from is players out of contract, I see no point in bringing in a has been that no one else wants, we are 2 points off the lead. You suggest we use an untried youngster who has no championship games or goals under his belt over one who has a record of 1 goal ever 2,or 3 games. I’m glad you aren’t our manager . Madness utter madness
I agree we need more goals spread around the team to take the burden off Fammy, but we seem to go long too often when Fammy is up top on his own, and he simply isn't good enough to trap the ball or hold it up, we saw that against Leeds. Maybe we need a formation change to give him a strike partner, Semenyo perhaps, a fast player who could benefit from flicks on's and Fammy pulling the defenders out of position, etc.
It’s not his fault we go long when he’s on, The rest of this post I agree entirely with. It annoys me when people knock Fam, he is what he is, a good championship striker, he will never be anything higher, but that’s where we are at present, his attitude and commitment is exemplary. Get off his back and support him.
Even with Afobe we need goals from around the team, as much as I liked Pack and co they didn’t get enough goals, hopefully Nagy, Palmer and Massengo will change that stat .
Fammy is a decent Championship striker without injury and suspension he would be close to 20 goals in each of the last two seasons
I saw Tammy’s first game for us, it was obvious he was a rare talent, are you seriously suggesting Semenyo is at the level Tammy was at?, because I’ve seen him and he isn’t. I do think alongside Fam and Afobe he would have learnt a lot , my point now is we stick with what we’ve got and bring someone in Jan, that will give Semenyo an opportunity to shine, but he will be by far the junior partner, to suggest he should be the main striker above Fam at present is daft.
