There's plenty off scams out there currently and many are easily detectable but also there are some very sophisticated ones which do catch people to the tune of $3 trillion dollars yearly. Have you ever been scammed or received dubious e-mails, pop up virus messages or even when buying a car? Share your experiences here. I once had an indian guy phone me from Windows support team who said my computer had a virus so I wasted as much of his time as possible before he relised he was being played and hung up. Also had 1000's of fake e-mails in my trash bin.
I got a really official looking email supposedly from HMRC saying that I was due a rebate of 2 grand, and could l forward my details for the funds to be paid into. I contacted HMRC, who confirmed that it was a scam and I wasn't due a rebate anyway. The email was very realistic and I can understand some people falling for it. HMRC do not pay refunds into accounts, only cheques apparently.
They have become very realistic over the years and I have also had many of those from HMRC. Anything from them and banks I always forwarded them to their respective phishing departments.
I had the same thing and was actually expecting a rebate. Looked official , I was prompted to log into my email account enter name address then mother's maiden name and bank deets Alarm bells went off. Quickly went into settings and changed my password before they could do anything.
If you wish to know if your e-mail address has been leaked (pwned) check here; https://haveibeenpwned.com
Yeah I'm sure they're not storing and redistributing everyone's email address when you type it in mate.
Can't say I've ever been scammed but had my credit card and other close family credit cards cloned. Never lost any money over them though, banks always take the hit, and normally realise before you do. Although I benefited out of one card clone, basically there was some confusion over two separate cards, and the money I spent on one just went down as bank losses, as they broke their own rules. Long story. Basic learning from it all is never let your card out of your sight. I had a brand new card cloned one time, so it was piss easy to trace back who done it. They must have had a skimmer either attached to their ankle or under the counter.
I had my card cloned in Hua Hin back in 2014, they had whizzed out £6000 in three days. I found out when I had not enough funds for a withdrawal. I got a police report and my bank sent me money via Western Union until I got back where the bank reimbursed me completely. I now only use ATM's in the bank.
Got an automated call the other day from someone pretending to be from HMRC telling me I had not paid enough tax and that I had 2 days to call and make a payment or court proceedings will start. It might have been convincing if I wasn't a PAYE employee Was an automated womans voice so it was like being threatened by the talking clock.
this brought back memories quite a few years years ago. I was on one off my returns to the UK, I came back to boost the coffers, and was getting leeters and calls from Natwest about running up a 2.5k overdraft..So i asked for a breakdown...The claimed the withdrawls were not from me, as i had never been to the places claimed. As i had banked with them for years, and they had all my my, they gave me the money back...I worked a little longer, withdrew the overdraft and ****ed off again. Needless to say, i can't bank with them anymore
