I stumbled across this today and remembered that you are interested in him so I thought I would share it. Looks quite the talent doesn't he? I had him down as a target man type player but he clearly has more in his locker than that.
Scored a hat-trick the other day, too. Warning: obligatory ****e music:
From what I've seen, he looks more like an upgrade for Defoe - similar player, just without the constant offside runs or shooting directly at the goalkeeper.
Highlights will do that though, Croydon. I'm yet to see him play 90 minutes, so I'll withhold my judgement til I have.
I read somewhere that it was a good thing he hadn't come to europe yet as he wasn't quite ready.I really don't think we'll get him unless we have CL next season, but there's no reason why we can't do that if we perform up to our best.He does look a very good player and ohhh the music PNP.Loved the 3rd goal.
He'd never get away with tricks and skills like that in the EPL. Someone like Barton or Shawcross would break his legs. Plus, I'm not sure we'd want a show-boater. If we did, Harry would play GDS more, and we would never have sold Taarabt.
He certainly looks good on these clips. However, as I know very little about the standard of Brazilian domestic football, it's hard to make an objective conclusion.
I wrote this and posted the link on a thread on another board a few months ago re Damiao. Seriously - that defending... ---------------------------------------------------- "I know we all like to get excited about stuff that's unknown but we've got remember that the guy is very young, very unproven and hasn't played a minute of Premier League football. I know that's all boring and obvious but I for one will not think "job done" if we sign Diamiao this summer. All transfers are risky. 21 year-olds (?) from another continent especially so. Having said that everyone has to start somewhere and he's been doing the business so far. All his goals for his club so far: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbm7jVzLY-Y&feature=player_embedded I have a bit of mixed feeling when I watch that. On the one hand you can see that he can finish nicely, has a bit of pace by the looks of things, can head and tries a nice trick for the second goal that sort of comes off (though doubt he'd get away with it in the Prem). On the other hand though the defending is woeful. For a good proportion of those goals (almost half it seemed) he's about six yards out with no-one marking him. Particular highlights of the comedy defending come at: 2:18 where the goalkeeper kicks the ball against his own defender, then gets busy celebrating that his defender bailed him out even though the ball is a couple of yards away from him, in play and in the possession of an attacker. He then makes the most incredible decision to not even challenge for the ball when it's played over. Damiao heads it in from point-blank range with no challenge from the goalie. I would be disappointed with myself if I did that and I'm horrible in goal. 3:04 I think there are eight defenders (maybe nine) plus a goalie in the box. There's an appalling heading clearance attempt, a crappy, ineffective clearance attempt and then, when the ball is played in there seem to be THREE unmarked attackers! Our boy tucks it away from about five yards out. Note as well that one of the games looks like it's being playing in the local park. So it's difficult to say how genuinely good he is. But, well, I'll still be as optimistic as anyone if he does come. But I'll be amazed if he doesn't take a while to settle and adapt. Nicely amazed, obviously." ----------------------------------------------- Lol! He does that trick again in the video in the post above. Have to echo the thought that if that sort of stuff worked in the EPL don't you think we'd see a lot more of it? I mean - surely any Prem footballer can do it, no? But the hat-trick looked pretty decent.
The thing is that he simply won't get the space in the EPL to make those kinds of tricks work. We play at a much faster pace, so space is limited, anyway; plus, we have a much more physical game, so that a player takes his life into his hands if he starts to dick around doing party tricks.
Come on, it was a friendly. Why not do something like that if the game doesn't matter? Its not like he wasted possession or anything.
Yeah, I can see where you're coming from. In the EPL the defending and goalkeeping would be completely different. I can't see him get away with at least half of those goals in the video you posted with better opposition.
Apparently, the release clause in his current contract stands at Eur 50mm. The Internacional vice-ppesident has been quoted as saying that they will not sell for less. So, unless somebody like Citeh wants him, it looks like he's staying where he is, for now, anyway
Good point, in the english league he wont get any time for tricks. I mean Ronaldo never ever performed any during a game did he!
That's most probably true, you'll find most Brazilian (and indeed South American) players have an obscene buy out clause.
Hey! I love a great bit of show-boating just the same as any other bloke. All I'm saying is that he wouldn't get away with those kinds of tricks in the EPL, not even in a friendly.
