A relation of mine used to head up the teams that went round the country turning buildings into Spoons. The timescales they had to work to was extremely short, but some of the refurbishments I’ve seen are quite nice tbf. I’m not a fan of any chain pub, I find them soulless. I’ve always been a lover of old school alehouses and the characters that frequent them.
Saw dust on the floor and wonky tables kinda gaffs. Deffo have more character but you gotta deal with the smelly piss guy befriending you. Which isnt great.
Exactly, been in some right dives over the years, but I’ve also met some sound people who I wouldn’t normally either come into contact with or spend any time chatting with. That’s what boozers are all about imo.
Them places are lost in London mate, hard to find a decent place like that, all gastro pubs with aussie travelers behind the bar who don't give a ****. And it shows
Spoons are ok, you know what you're getting. The beer is actually better than decent, it's very good and very good value. The food is, as someone said, average but edible. They do breakfast as well, which is at least a partial reason (excuse) why people are in so early. You see the oddest sights. I was in one having breakfast last year and were trying to spot the piss head. This rambler bloke comes in, boots, rucksack, massage whole ramble shebang. Goes to bar, orders a breakfast and comes back with a pint of San Miguel. Proceeds to have another during breakfast, then rambles off. All before 10.30 am.
I’ve been in a few over the years mate, they’re still around, just less of them these days. Maybe not in Fulham though......
Okay I've got a solution @brb. Strip Chief of his mod status and then fix the tagging shiz for the rest of the mods.
I'll be back down there tomorrow and have every intention of having my tea in this very Spoons. Pint of Jail Ale, mixed grill, couple of G&T's. It's a great pub. Living the dream.
Yeah they are about. Just hard to find Tbh most pubs down here change manager or owners so often it's pointless having a "local"
There's a brilliant pub in my town. Proper old school, still has a granite flag stone floor. They don't serve food, but there's always cashews and peanuts on the bar. Mobile phones are banned and there are loads of real ales available. Has a fiddly dee night each week. Proper pub.
Tbf Fulham is **** for boozers as is Putney, there's some lovely Riverside pubs down near Hammersmith way you could sit in all day and night though, Chiswick also has a few nice boozers too.
You can't beat an old school boozer though, whenever I go somewhere in the UK overnight I'm always looking up ****ty old pubs.
I used to see a bird from Putney and we'd go to a pub down on the river. Can't remember the name but it was a lovely old place. Dennis wise used to drink there too, the horrible little **** ****.
