Not long to go till the Great North Run lads.

As I look forward to my first ever Run I'd like to wish all you not606ers all the best for the big day.

It looks like it will be a rather wet day but with 100,000+ North Easterners cheering us on we'll be allright, I'm sure.

I'm running for Macmillan (and in memory of my mam) and have raised £1280 so far and truth be told I don't know what to expect on the day but am honestly more excited than when I was a kid looking forward to Santa.

For me it's not about the time.. it's about the finish line and keeping a promise to me mam.

All the best everyone and see you at the finishing line!!

I normally stand at the bottom of the bank as you hit South Shields sea front, and usually try to trip anybody up who's wearing a skunk top. However, I will miss this years event due to circumstances beyond my control....

Only kidding lads and lasses...Good luck to all who are mad enough to do it..<applause>

Now that would be funny seeing someone getting tripped up.

    Hi mate,
This time last year I hadn't run a mile.
I started off in the gym on a treadmill measureing my (initially slow) progress in minutes before I was wrecked... Once I got up to 20 mins of non stop running I got out on the road. My biggest aid was my iphone app (nikeplus) as it tracked me very accurately (time/distance/calories). anyway to cut a long story short I gradually built up my time and distance to the point where, on the 31s July I ran from Consett to near Rowlands Gill along the Derwent Walk and back and clocked 21.6km (just over the half marathon). I hurt my plantar fiiscitis (tendon under the arch of the foot) but have gradually eased myself back in.
you will get injuries, they will get you down but as long as you take is steady and gradually build up your body will take the pain.
so in summary I'd sugest starting early, and building gradually.
Going to 'up and running' in Fenwicks also helped as they sorted out my running gait and I bought a proper pair of shoes which helped enormously as I over pronate (foot rolls inwards too much).
    hope this helps!

Good luck to you for Sunday, and to anybody else taking part. I only ever did the run once, my husband used to do it every year but one year had to pull out at the last minute due to work commitments. I used his number and ran in his place, I unfortunately did not do it for charity, I had no time to train or organise a charity to run for, but it was a great experience. I was ok until I passed the huge pub on the roundabout before you reach the sea front at Marsden, my knees were doomed by this stage. I finished with in a reasonable time, my knees were sore for about two weeks and it is definitely something I would like to do again.

Good luck Albert, I will see you there, I'm also running for Macmillan, first timer also.

Remember it's all about the experience and the good that you have achieved from the whole event

I'm doing it for the first time as well, driving up from Northampton tomorrow. So excited. Mo Farah is starting it as well apparently which is pretty cool.

Best of luck to you and I hope you manage to raise plenty of cash for your efforts. It's a very worthy cause.
