Was going to post this in the Politics thread, but I don't want to interrupt the flow of EU/Brexit posts.

As we know, Trump decided way back to put up huge tariffs to any country which he feels is taking advantage of the USA. The backlash is that those tariffs are often reciprocated. Trump has really gone to town on one country - China. First he questioned major tech company Huawei, and banned their use in the US, then he introduced tariffs and began a trade war against China, accusing them of stealing intellectual property. Unfortunately, he isn't aware of the history. The USA and China negotiated the handing over of intellectual property decades ago, when the US wanted cheap manufacturing labour, and China said, ok, you can use ours, but we want something back. And that something back was the intellectual property. China also wanted markets to be opened for them by the USA. That suited the USA too. Obviously, that no longer suits the USA.

Fast forward to 2019 and the Trump tariffs are in full swing and nobody, except Treasury coffers in the short term, is benefitting. Indeed, it appears it might trigger a recession in the USA in 2020. All the while, Elon Musk and a Tesla/China team have been building a factory in China. It is now pretty much complete in super record time of 7 months [instead of 2 years], with the first test models coming off a test production line. The new vehicles will not be subject to tariffs, so Tesla have put the prices up a tad, plus China has waived the purchase tax on them. And guess what? That old intellectual property issue is probably going to happen again, because China has loads of EV manufacturers and they want some Tesla's state-of-the-art technology. And Tesla wil be happy to hand some of it over because they've previously opened all their patents to fair use, and because they want to push the EV revolution forward. And there's nothing that Trump can do about it. This means that the first/next EV you buy may well be Chinese. It will be well made, with great performance, and brimming with tech. And may well be a whole lot cheaper than something from Europe, and definitely better and cheaper than something from Big Auto USA. The times they are a-changing:

No joke, I'm making a special trip to Spain in August 2026 to watch the total solar eclipse. Should be fun. An excellent partial eclipse will be viewable from Southampton, but what's the betting it'll be cloudy - even in August. Apparently 81% of the time. That's the odds. So I'm going.

It's OK, I'll tell everyone the answer. :D

They are a Starlink internet satellite stack. I think you can see about half of them in this photo. There are another 60 odd on the opposite side. In a few years there will be several thousand in low Earth orbit, all interconnected, providing almost free internet access across the world.

Edit: Actually, you're seeing them all. See photo and explanation in another post below.
