Sunderland did, and do still have a massive away fan base mate., not many places we'd go and be scared, obviously there was a few dicey places and moments. Was all good fun along the way.
Ah I've said it before - always loved you guys. Saw some crackers at Vicarage Road and the chat pre and post match was always great
I always remember going to Boothferry Park (Hull) and the stewards trying to send us into the wrong end of the ground. Thankfully some other lads knew the place and redirected us.
Yeah mate, some stewards were in cahoots with the hoolies at some grounds. You had to have your wits about you.
Ah yeah - comedy stewards. Got into Anfield late in 1999 and the bloke tells us it's 1-0. I said "ah we will turn it round" he says "you're ****ing 1-0 up you cheeky little cockney ****" Probably wasn't the best time to give him a lesson on where cockneys come from ..
One of the worst ever, place just went totally mental....i think there is a vid online somewhere with it on.
Remember being at Highbury for Man Utd and at HT, I was downstairs in the west stand by the bar which wasn't segregated, and trying to get back to my seat I accidentally knocked somebody's elbow and spilled his pint. As I turned round to apologise, I saw this fist come flying over my head right into the mush of some bloke next to me. In an instant the whole thing kicked off and within seconds there were pieces of the bar being ripped off and thrown at people, blokes diving in feet first, and ****ing carnage. Remember standing on the steps back up to the seats and giving it the big un' from a safe distance, then when the Utd fans started charging I was ****ing out of there in a shot. The Old Bill poured in shortly after that and cracked a few heads. I used to love telling that story to my mates about how I caused it to kick off that day
I still don't get tag notifications! But yeah, football hooliganism so a neutral ground as far away as possible, was it St Etienne? Closer for them too I suppose! Worst away day I've had was at Ayresome Park between Christmas and New Year when the freezing cold 'lock in' after the **** game lasted longer than the game itself. Best? Europe trip's and finals are always a hoot but not so much an away 'day'. Probably a 6 2 win in the league cup at Highbury, so was mid week. Proper trip to and night out in London, dicking Arsenal was a bonus. As was the Lee Sharpe hat trick. Went to a good few away nights back then, hell of a laugh.
