John Arlott and Dan Maskell in their respective sports were excellent. I always enjoy John McEnroe's colour commentary.
Henry Longhurst was a great golf commentator. “They say 'practice makes perfect.' Of course, it doesn't. For the vast majority of golfers it merely consolidates imperfection”. When he first commentated in the USA he was that quiet at one tournament that the producers, used to American commentators who babbled on constantly, thought there was a fault with the mic and sent someone to check. Everyone watching can see we are witnessing are a great game of golf. They didn’t need him telling them what they could see for themselves and spoiling it by talking non stop he explained. A pity some current commentators don’t have that attitude.
Agreed. Not only does it consolidate imperfection, it knackers your bank balance in persuit of imperfection.
Coleman and Davies and locally Burnsie occassionally but no one has mentioned any females who are working their way in through the BBC. I'll be the sexist one and say I have to turn the sound down when a 3rd or 4th game comes on MOTD with a woman commentating. Just isn't right in my humble opinion. It'll come as they are now easing out Geoffrey on the Ashes commentary!
Ian Darke was the voice of the Premier League when ESPN had the Match of the Week. I wish American sportscasters had his quality. Most annoying? Hmmmmm
Burnsey is a quality commentator, he's wasted on Blunderside…. When he described Charlton as a 'clown team' and peeved off Jim Davidson I did chuckle to myself, which is a first were Davidson is concerned.
Gary Neville is getting more and more annoying. He generally picks out one player to criticise and does not shut up about it regardless of all other action on the pitch. Was Sanchez yesterday. Not really ground breaking analysis either as Sanchez was not in his usual position so anybody could say he would not perform in the same way
I ****ing hate how loved Bullard seems to be. ****ing makes the blood boil. If only you properly knew you ****s.
I like it when Boycott is on the radio with one of the ladies, he seems to find it hard to deal with. The cricket analysts are all pretty good. I think where womens commentators on the footy fall down is where they try to mimic the male commentators.
