Has anyone seen Kevin friend's decision ahainst villa? What is the point of VAR if it can't even overrule that disgrace
Mostly offsides and non subjective decisions like it should have been from the start. Once it gets that right it can start looking at subjective ****. But right now i think its right not to get involved. I'm actually struggling not to see that as a dive anyway. He's crashed into, takes several steps forward until he's in the box, then falls over spectacularly. Not sure why it was a foul as he didn't claim for anything though, but whats that got to do with VAR? Edit: From the PL "The VAR was unable to check the 'goal' because the whistle went before the ball went into the net." You cant start allowing goals scored after the whistle went and play is meant to have stopped....
A dive is effectively a foul. I haven't seen the incident but if it was a dive the referee was correct in awarding a free kick.
It wasn't a dive to try and deceive the ref, it was just after he passed it and was already off balance from an earlier challenge. I think he was just trying to avoid twisting anything while falling. There was contact after he started going down which is why i think Friend thought it was a dive. It wasn't simulation is probably what i should say.
It was an absolute disgrace, villa were robbed, and it is yet another decision that hasn't been made any better by VAR. May as well say that it's purely for offside decisions at this point. (Which I happen yo think would be a fair reason to use it any way. The one rule that is black and white).
Why not just let play continue, then bring it back for var to look at? That was a big mistake by Kevin Friend, and shows that he does not know how to utilise var. And that brings it back to interpretation & human error, which makes it unnecessary. Very frustrating.
This post says it all. Completely subjective. I also saw it as a dive from the tv pictures but you make the case for an off balance, injury avoiding fall. VAR as a finite technology could never solve a subjective issue. So here it’s use or non use is irrelevant. This may have just gone down to the difference of subjective view between Friend and VAR officials. And after Friend’s pitch perfect performance for Saints at Brighton we now know he has transformed in to the worlds best ref...
But allow play to continue rather than blow the whistle in the midst of a unclear section of play entering the penalty area. Its just logical. Unless you think it was clear? Looked anything but for me. And what about Newcastle's goal, clear handball in the build up, var checked it and said, 'yeah that's okay this week.' What the actual **** is going on. Its just so random.
I don’t see it like that. It was an absolute disgrace when Saints were cheated at Watford with the handball equaliser the other year. What happened with Villa was subjective and a good case is made either way. You are right that var doesn’t make any difference here but nobody said it would. There is middle ground where var can sort out more things than just offside - eg howlers previously mentioned and incidents refs don’t see. That’s not the case here - Friend did see it and interpreted what he saw.
I agree there has been eyebrow raising inconsistencies but there’s no point being outraged about it. By all accounts when it was first introduced in Germany it was a disaster but I think that the initial efforts in the Premier League have been far more considered. We are in a new era and I don’t think anyway expected it to come in and seamlessly and solve the games officiating woes. Luckily for Saints we haven’t been burnt by it yet and having attended the 2 home games you would never have known it even existed. I’m sure when I feel a Saints injustice I will not be so positive about var but I’d like to think I can remain objective.
I'm not outraged, I was expecting it to be like this. More surprised that we haven't been screwed yet! But, that handball in the toon game, explain that to me. That is what the goal check is for.
I'll help you. Any handball whether accidental or not will be penalised. And then they don't..........
