Sadly, the far right has been mainstream in France for decades.

 

Hope you're right. Just that it's been a regular thing there this year. All at different stadiums. Just weird.

 

Part of the problem is that one group doing it and getting a negative reaction emboldens others. Those sorts of fans tend to be younger, and almost exclusively male, and young men who want to show how transgressive they are the absolute worst*. No one wants to be the softie that says "uh guys this is pretty ****ing awful why are we doing this".

Support my political platform of locking every male in a room to watch soothing nature documentaries from the ages of 17 to 29. It's either that or we go back to having thrice-yearly wars.

*I hope we develop time travel solely so that I can slap 21 year old me across the teeth, and I've been reliably informed that I was less of an asshole at that age than many of my peers.

Throw in the fact that most people who are far right (or far left) are usually idiots and it is easy to see how this can happen. I don't think it is some political agenda to infiltrate games and try and get their message out there, these people were going to games anyway and decided to do it whilst there

Society has to come down on unacceptable behaviour....you may not change people's mindset, but you can drive it underground where it is less likely to attract more followers. Ignored and it just gets bigger like a ball of crap being rolled by a dung beetle.

 

Unfortunately that means relying in the French police, who are shockingly inept.

I think that might be happening right now. The ordinary good people, of reasonable education and awareness [of which I hopefully count myself] are still in a kind of apathetic shock. We always thought "it won't come to this". Looks like we're wrong.

 

And now three days later, the opposite end of France, in Metz, a homophobic banner temporarily halts a game with PSG.

Why are the police not searching people as they go in? Surely a 100ft banner is tough to smuggle through. And do they even have stewards?

 

I have a colleague from Metz and a big fan. I’ll ask him.
