And while we're at it, how about fixed budgets in the Premier League too? <whistle>

What and create a competitive and open sporting market that anyone could win? Ludicrous! Next you will propose a draft system which gives advantage to those who struggled last year in an attempt to further balance things out.

That would be no way to run the Business Association.

Nope, because bigger clubs will have bigger salary budgets further entrenching their position. The only thing that will work is a uniform team based salary cap.

I don't see any reason why an incredibly successful business like Manchester United shouldn't be able to spend more than a much smaller business like Southampton personally.

Because it results in a huge competitive imbalance. Do you want Southampton to actually have a chance of winning something, or would you rather Southampton just make up the numbers, with the best you can hope for being an occasional scalp against a 'big club'?

I'd be delighted if we had a chance of winning the Championship ;)

My point is though that if would be unfair to limit their spending to the same as our level (for example) as their success is the fundamental reason why they can spend more.

I genuinely don't see why that shouldn't be the case, same as there's a reason that we can spend more than say, Crawley.

Like UK society in general there should be an evening up of wealth distribution in English football too.
I'm not saying everybody equal, just a bit more fairness and success should always be rewarded but in proportion always.

The way things are going, many more traditional and long standing community clubs will fall by the wayside.

Success should be its own reward, the reward of success shouldn't be to make success more likely. Otherwise big clubs will win something then they'll be more likely to win something because they've won it and so on and so on until we have this case where the Premier League is pretty much a shoe-in between 2 or 3 clubs and everyone else is just making up the numbers.

As for Crawley, as they're in League 2, there would be a different team based salary cap for them.

Also parachute fees should be scrapped (or at least reduced), the need of which can be offset by having relegation clauses a compulsory part of players' contracts.

It should be more down to how many people you get through the gates like in the old days. The CL has allowed the elite to run away and virtually form a cartel which they pick apart any potential threat by buying their better players and taking their Managers with players often citing CL football as their motivation for leaving.
The only end I can see to it now is for those elite to join a European league (Brexit might put the mockers on that though!) in the future unfortunately and then limit the amount of players that they can sign from English Football..

Well if you're successful then you'll attract more fans which equals more money, United probably sell more shirts in a year than we have in a decade for example. Are you suggesting getting rid of prize money?

I do understand what you're getting at but you're never going to remove money from the game completely and the more successful clubs will always have more to spend.

Crawley was just an example, if we were both in the Championship or league one then the point is still valid. Have Sunderland and Gillingham instead if you prefer.

I do kind of agree about parachute payments though it's not something that could be done suddenly for obvious reasons.

The only way to do it is if all the money goes into a central pot and is “the leagues” which then gets distributed equally to all teams in the league

We usually get a middling team...little excitement, but perfectly capable of beating us on a bad day.
