I've been doing some reading. And I'd like to clarify before I make this thread that it's not intended as a wind-up, just as a debunking of certain ideas which have been floated on not606 by Hull fans. Hence why I'm posting it only on the Leeds board so there isn't a mass, angry reaction that I'm on a wind-up, and only those who wish to see/comment on it will do so. The common myths are that Hull is actually a reasonably normal place which has been hard done by because of that Channel 4 show which unjustly called them the UK's worst city. They also say that things are improving. How do they vouch for the following statistics from the UK Centre for Cities' Outlook 2011 report? Hull is the least prosperous city in the UK. Hull has the highest benefit claimant count of any UK city. Hull has the worst unemployment rate in the UK. Hull is the fifth least skilled/qualified city in the UK. Hullensians earn the lowest wages in the UK. Hull has been identified as one of the cities for which things are bound to get worse. I've been there a fair few times and it's not exactly hell, but it's always looked pretty run down and chavvy. And that's sad to see as a Yorkshireman. Do any of you think these stats are out of place and giving the city a raw deal? I certainly don't believe that Hull's going places, or a particularly nice place to live. So what is the worst place to live in the UK? And hey, why not suggest the best too while we're at it. i've only been to hull once and to be fair it looked pretty bad and i didnt exactly want to stay. But i have to say where i grew up in London was a hell of a lot worse. You cant say the whole of london is worse than hull as it changes quite dramatically depending on where you are in london but parts of it are a lot worse than hull from what i saw anyway
Right on. Other than that though, the Hull fans have actually been trying to argue that it's not as bad as people claim ... to Leeds fans? Fans of a club based in one of the most desirable cities to live in in the country? Hull could be average and we'd still think it's a ****hole.
I'm surprised at you putting up a an article like this Ducky, also disappointed. If you want to do a fair comparison, then you need to compare those figures with just Leeds council estates and the city centre, as that's what those Hull figures are based on. The reason Hull does so badly in all these tables, is purely because of the areas that fall under the control of Hull City Council. If the Leeds table only included the city centre and areas like Seacroft, Gipton, Halton Moor, East End Park, Chapeltown, Harehills, how do you think you would fair? Almost half the people that would consider themselves to be from Hull, don't actually live in areas controlled by Hull City council, not one of the West Hull suburbs is included in those figures, so they are not remotely representative of the experiences of much of the population here. Maybe you should stick to talking about Leeds, you self evidentially don't know enough about Hull to pass judgement.
Couldn't of said it better OLM Hull has always being slated as the worst place to live in England but i live about 2 minutes away from the KC in West Hull and it's really pleasent where as i used to live near the Orchard Park area and that was dreadfull. Hull is not as bad as everyone thinks it depends where you go
Here's an accurate way of checking at least one stat, the crime figures in the area where you live. Put your postcode in here and see what crimes have happened in the area where you live during the month of July: http://www.police.uk/ For my North London home, the stats are: Burglary 43 Anti-social behaviour 236 Robbery 30 Vehicle crime 29 Violent crime 87 Other crime 313 For my East Yorkshire home the stats are: There were no reported crimes in your area.
I worked in Hull (mainly Hessle) in the early 90's. Used to stay in the bit with all the big Victorian houses with fountains at the junctions (name?) which was pretty good. However, the red light district and associated dens of iniquity were right up in the main shopping centre which was really run down, and the city centre was the first place I remember regularly seeing police vans waiting on Fri/Sat night. The Hull Cheese pub and surrounds were notorious for kicking out time fun (like any dock/port town really). To be fair it has suffered from severe industrial decline since. Is it a plus that they used to say if you couldn't pull in Hull you couldn't pull anywhere? Basingstoke would get my vote as a complete dump........
I think you'll find it's changed a fair bit in the past twenty years, people arriving by train to Hull are no longer greeted with this monstrosity.... please log in to view this image Instead, they are greeted with this... please log in to view this image Which is rather more impressive than this..... please log in to view this image There's still much work to be done, but Hull doesn't come close to being one of the worst places to live.
It's only recently been done, I can only get a more recent picture if I drive down there and take it myself, but I'm afraid I've got to be at the hairdressers in an hour, so you'll just have to trust me, it looks exactly like it does in the picture(but the machinery in the corner has gone and it's got people in it). I've got a nice picture of it on a night, if that helps? please log in to view this image
No, that's fine. Quite pretty really. I remember the old station . I'm presuming it's changed inside too!! Happy haircut for later.
Having been to most of the larger towns and Cities in England, Coventry is by far the worst i've been to, it reminds me of what Hull was like in the 80s! As for Leeds, i've lived there 9 years and the 49/50 bus route that stretches from Seacroft through Harehills and Burmantofts is the most depressing urban landscape in the UK, not seen anywhere in Hull as aesthetically difficult on the eye.
I`ve been to Hull a few times and its nothing to write home about, The Deep is good though, and I like the Airfix factory or whatever it is with the aircraft outside. Also like the docks, so it is actually a pretty industrious place wit something a bit different to see. Bradford on the other hand is a complete stinking **** hole and should be flattened. It serves no purpose only to house scum and the workshy.
