Makes you realise just how good Keane actually was for so many years. He was Spurs through and through.
Yeah there's no doubting Keane was a great player, his best years were alongside Berbatov, such a great partnership. Though I think he was Wolves, Spurs, Liverpool and Celtic through and through Solid
I really don't remember Simon Davies winning this award. When we signed him and Etherington they both had a lot of potential, but neither really fulfilled it while at WHL. Shame.
I remember Davies having a storming season 1 year. I think he then started suffering from injuries. There was talk of man utd being interested the summer after his good year (for £8m, which was a lot at that point). Nothing ever came of it though
Yeah, then the injuries kicked in and his legs fell apart, as happens to every Spurs prospect that doesn't leave early. I was surprised Thorstvedt won it, I'd have thought the fans were unlikely to have gone for a 'keeper unless they were really amazing, which Thorstvedt wasn't.
Being a bit younger I only caught the end of Ray's career but I wouldn't put Thorstvedt ahead of him. Fairplay though I was very young at the time so perhaps I didn't really appreciate hiw 'keeping talents enoug.
A little unfair to Keane, Lidls. He's outscored any English striker at international level, despite playing for a weaker team and not playing that many more times than Bobby Charlton, for example. Anyone that scores more than 50 goals for their country should be seen as a top class striker.
I agree with half of Luke's post. If he'd have found one club, and stayed there he'd have been top class at club level. I think the fact he scored so many for ROI is he has 'stayed' there all his playing career.
Keane was seriously very good. Remember that he wasn't always an established starter at Spurs. There was that season where Defoe was ahead of him (to partner Mido?) and every time he came on he livened things up and made things happen to such an extent that he became a nailed-on starter. When he and Berbatov were clicking so nicely together he was probably my favourite Spurs player (ahead of Berbatov, btw). Who could forget how much we all wanted a team of Robbie Keanes?! That song was made for him. On the issue of Simon Davies I also remember him having a great season (or two) for us - he was a much bigger success than Etherington. I especially remember that the season he broke through and was superb Stephen Carr was out for the whole season (or as good as) and I was gutted that they didn't play together. Having said that I don't think it worked when they did play together. And what about the bad old days when Stephen Carr was by far our most dangerous and creative player? No offence meant to him but he was our right back for heaven's sake. Those were dark days. Thanks for the post, Lidl. Interesting reading.
