Could you imagine todays players coping with the cup replay against Leeds in 1970. Unless it's lush today, they can't play.
I think the old 'hard-nuts' would get absolutely battered myself, a bunch of smoking boozers v the athleticism of today's footballers it would be no contest. As for how soft they are today, that's all gamesmanship for the ref's benefit.
Easily, if the same rules were apllied as they were. You thin peole like Hunter were 'hard-men' but they were just snidey cowards who'd take people out from behind. Franny Lee was considered a bit of a pussy, but when Hunter blind-sided him with a punch it was Hunter who ended up on the floor.
I'm sure there would be a market nowadays for a more brutal brand of football. Bloodball Rules: no weapons and only on the ball violence allowed. First team to score 5 or hospitalise the opposition wins.
we used to play foul football at school, pretty ****ing vicious, though I personally think a professional British Bulldog league would be a hit. Not so sure the NHS would approve though.
Yeah always makes me smile when you hear some fat middle aged bloke in the crowd say something like “give me 5 mins alone with him” about a professional athlete in the prime of his life. Some of the dirty ****s from the 70s wouldn’t be able to get close enough to today’s players to be able to kick them

To paraphrase Shane MacGowan... He'll chop you down like an old dead tree, Dirty old Brown, Dirty old Brown...
Who was that yard dog centre back who played for Sheff U and was their captain I think, handy with the elbows, proper ****?
Chris Morgan....Fat Pat had a run in with him during our Q/F match with them at Bramall Lane. He looks a bit of a psycho tbf.
