But you use the internet? You use google? You have an internet based email account with a big company ? You use Amazon or Netflix? Not criticising, just pointing out this is not just FB. This is huge and really makes you think.
I did say.... “as a start”...... the rest I’m in with everyone else. I wasn’t pointing fingers at FB, although they hardly cover themselves in glory.
Yep, it has really made me think. Scary how powerful the tech companies are and how they can manipulate the world.
thanks Helen, point is she's recovering Certainly wouldn't have posted if she wasn't. I'm now up to 11 kittens saved in the last 3 years! and only 3 still living with me! (all spayed) Life is good!
There is a small difference bewtween FB and Google in the sense that FB has had the opportunity to be a little more responsible and to curb its data trawling ways, and Zuckenberg has decided to go for maximum profit and screw it. Plus, there are ways of blocking off Google, to a certain extent, although with almost every browser using a Chromium base, that gets harder. But you can keep Google's data gathering to very generalised results, by doing things like, only using search engines like Duck Duck Go, or if you must hand over data, at least plant a few trees with Ecosia. There are a few ways to spoil the big companies' parties a bit, but the vast majority of people have not a clue how much they are being spied upon [let's face it, neither does anyone know the full extent, not even enlightened users or FB and Google people, for that matter]. And the consent for all of it is signed away in that bit where they ask you to accept the rules or not. Can't do much if you don't. BTW, as mentioned before, I made the mistake of getting a FB account for a short while. That's now closed, but I can still see echoes of it in my day to day internet activity.
McDonald's paper straws cannot be recycled. The fast cardboard food company go from plastic straws that could be recycled to paper ones that cannot. All in the name of BS: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-49234054
The world CO2 atmospheric content got to 415ppm recently. That's the highest it has even been since records began. And just to illustrate that HICC is not something that we're only just beginning to understand and measure properly, here's a graph from Exxon [Esso, as it was back then to you and me]. It was an internal paper memo from 1982, but it survives to this day. Note the prediction: The red lines have been added to make it easy for you to see the findings. Remember, these are predictions from 1982 only. They are very accurate indeed. And not by luck. They knew how to measure and they understood what was happening. The key factors of the atmosphere and what we are doing to it have been understood for years, despite what you hear from politicians and lobbyists in the pockets of the oil companies. But they didn't tell anyone. It shouldn't be a surprise to people. Scientists and researchers are not idiots, and Exxon employed some pretty clever ones. But if they wanted to keep their excellent living standards they kept their gobs shut. The appearance of the graph here [this one has been known about for several years] shows that somebody thought better of it. EDIT: Here's some light reading. The entire internal document. I haven't read it in ages, so if you have questions I'll have to go and read it again before I can answer. And then I still may be fluffy. . Note where 'Greenhouse Effect' originated from. https://insideclimatenews.org/sites/default/files/documents/1982 Exxon Primer on CO2 Greenhouse Effect.pdf
Not being funny here but am I wrong in thinking the single use plastic straws that were in use before were recyclable. I understand that if they are not disposed of correctly then they become a problem, However that's not the poor plastic straw's more the ignorant person who is littering.
This is mostly to do with people not disposing of waste correctly. The plastic straws were reasonably ok if they were disposed of correctly. The paper straws could actually be worse in terms of what has to be done to them to get back into the system. There are clear pros and cons but they don't always fall into the slots we like them to. The BS bit is that McDonalds have done it to improve their image. Not necessarily the environment. But I have the solution to the problem - don't eat there. That'll improve the environment and your health too.
I get what your saying but on a purely selfish note I used to love a strawberry milkshake but these are impossible to drink through a paper straw.
Good point. Actually, why do people drink beers straight out of a bottle? Is it just to be cool? Because any liquid has far more flavour once you combine it with air. So I always have any beer in a glass.
Not sure you could drink a milkshake without a straw. You could maybe eat it with a spoon but that would be weird.
And I would always advocate making your own with strawberries and ice cream in a liquidiser. Far better and way cheaper.
